Quite right. Metformin has been known to help overweight diabetics lose weight. It alters your taste buds and some ppl find a metallic taste in their mouth after taking it. This helps to curb food cravings. And unlike other anti-diabetic drugs like sulphonylureas, Metformin does not cause the body to produce more insulin. Insulin is an anabolic hormone...it makes the body build mass, inhibit protein and fat breakdown and causes the body to store excess sugar in the form of glycogen. Thats why its so easy to gain weight when on certain anti-diabetic drugs. On the contrary, Metformin causes the body to be more sensitive to insulin....so the body does not need to produce as such insulin. Hope that helps!

I'm diabetic. I've been told by my doctor that when blood sugar is out of control people tend to not gain weight because the food is not being used properly by the body. When on the proper medication (with me it's insulin) is taken and blood sugars are under control, the body is using the food properly, and therefore there is weight gain.
    hope this helps

I think it might have some truth to it. I am insulin and it is very hard to lose weight. Before i was using a high dose of insulin and the more insulin the hungrier you get. So then it was really hard plus insulin makes you gain some weight but not a lot according to my doctor. However, now ive totally changed my eaten habits for the best. I workout every day for an hour, drink a lot of water, and as a result my insulin dosage is very very low compared to before. I have lost weight as a result of all my changes. My mother has taken both glyburide and glucophage and in her case has never caused her to gain weight. If anything she's lost weight. Good luck.

Unfortunately, getting your sugar level in check can actually make it harder to lose weight.
