I want to lose weight but not really sure what to do as far as going to the gym. Anyone know of someone or somewhere I can go that would offer good personal level weight loss and management? Please help, I really don't know where to start.

It really, really depends. There is no simple answer. Some personal tips though, from experience (in 2 years I lost about 100 lbs):
-If you eat red meat, only eat LEAN cuts (sorry no more prime rib)
-Avoid restaurants, and if you cannot, order things like broiled chicken (make sure it doesn't have BREADING!). Also, all "creamy" sauces are probably not a good idea (Order a TOMATO based sauce when possible!!!)
-If you haven't already, switch from white flour products to brown flour / whole grain products.
-ANYTHING fried is bad. Even fried "healthy" foods like chicken are pretty much void of nutritional value after they've been fried (or at least trade off is terrible).
-Cardio Excercise (although this is obvious) should be done at least 3-4 days a week. I recommend an elliptical machine if you are just starting out.
-Lift weights, yes WEIGHTS. Having larger muscles increases your metabolism. Don't worry about becoming "too muscular" - this won't happen for a long time, trust me. You will have tons of time to shape your body any way you want it once the pounds start to melt off.
-If you start working out, increase your LEAN protein (Tuna, Chicken Breast, Turkey Breast).
-For essential fats, eat lots of fish (Salmon is gold for this).
    -Avoid deserts.
    -NEVER EVER stuff yourself.
-Eat 5 times a day (I know this sounds counter productive but all elite athletes do it - if its healthy and portioned right, this is key - speeds your metabolism right up!)
-Cut your Saturated Fat way down and avoid trans fats like the plague.
Anyways the program I used was from an Ebook called Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle (www.fitren.com). It really worked for me. If you are really serious about getting in shape let me warn you - it requires DEDICATION and HARD WORK.
There are no short cuts. And whatever you do, DO NOT go on a low carb diet. They have health reprocussions like you wouldn't believe.
I also wanted to address a previous answer above - although "walking" is technically an excercise, it really is pretty ineffective for burning fat. You need to get your heart rate up to be effective. Like I said, I was extremely obese (340lbs - and now I'm still technically overweight but I'm extremely healthy compared to 2 years ago) but I was still able to start off on the elliptical machine. Its EXTREMELY low impact.
Oh, and one last tip, if you decide to buy any piece of gym equipment, don't cheap out. For example, DO NOT go for a 100-200$ elliptical machine, those are total crap and you won't enjoy yourself. I bought a EFX 2.19 by Precor for $2000, and let me tell you was the best investment I ever made. If you can't afford that, start going to the gym.

I'm a 22-year-old 5Ə female weighing 267 pounds. I used to LOVE fast food and just sitting around doing nothing. Not sure what switch went off in my head a couple of weeks ago, but I suddenly decided that for the new year (and for my upcoming Spring birthday trip), I'd like to look good in a bikini again. I'm tall, and have played plenty of sports growing up until now and have plenty of muscle, but can definitely lose some pounds!
So I started walking. For the first week (started Wednesday), I walked a mile on my lunch break, a mile when I got home from work, and then two miles later at night. Also in the first week, I completely cut fast food OUT and started drinking more water. I went grocery shopping and loaded up on my favorite fruits and vegetables, low-calorie and nonfat snacks, and carry bottled water with me everywhere. By the weekend, I had upped my walking to two miles at work, one when I got home from work, and two miles later at night. Still eating healthy foods, and plenty of them! (I love food!)
Now that it's Friday, it has been a total of nine days since I changed my diet and started to just walk. JUST WALK. That is all I am doing. I'm getting more sleep, drinking more water, and enjoying my new energy.
SO FAR, I HAVE LOST ELEVEN POUNDS. IN NINE DAYS. I'm not stressing out about it, just upping my healthy lifestyle habits a bit. Every little bit helps, and may not look like much at first, but set long-term goals (ie. my birthday is in May and I am going to Vegas).
Also, if you have one of those days where you just can't avoid fast food or a quick bite or a dinner out somewhere, please see this website for a list of menu items at popular restaurants. It lists basic nutritional value (or lackthereof) and if you know the Weight Watchers points system, it has the number of points per serving as well. (HINT: the lower the points, the better!)

Check out your local gym. If you have $ , hire a personal trainer who can help you with exercises and recommend a diet.

Start a diet - any diet you find and like. I can suggest you Winter diet for beginning.
Exercise - it can be just walk (5 km per day at the beginning), run, dance, swim
Change the diet after two weeks - start new one, continuing exercising. The secret is the body not to get used with the particular diet
Do not give up if you do not lose weight as fast as you want. The body needs time to react.
