Ask:What is the best dog food for weight loss
2009-01-13 17:49:07Josie is a 5 yr old border collie mix with low thyroid currently on medication. I just had her levels checked again and she is on the right dose, but after months on meds and various weight loss dog foods we haven't had much luck losing weight. Our vet even suggested switching half of her kibble to green beans which we did but little effect. She loves to play fetch and gets to play twice a day when we feed the horses, and she runs hard, always the first one to the toy and the last to want to stop. We have a lab and other outside dogs that have adopted us, all without a weight issue and she and the lab play inside and outside. She swam this summer several times a week plus walks, and still only lost a pound. She eats 1/4 of what the lab gets. I'm tired of fixing green beans after 6 wks and no results, and was looking at buying the best choice for her, but everyone has a different opinion. I've been doing low fat/low calorie now with no results. Confused as to whether she's getting too few calories and her metabolism is at a standstill or what. She was never a big eater even before dieting. Read about Life's Advantage, Nutro Ultra and Max, Eukanuba Weight Loss, Solid Gold, and others and not sure where to go. Vet said they carried the Science Diet r/d and w/d but would try something at Petco first. I know Science Diet gets bagged alot and it is twice the cost of everything else. We live in a small town so there aren't alot of options and have been feeding Beneful Weight Management. We can certainly order whatever we need online. I just want her to lose weight and have never had a fat dog before. Currently we have been feeding her 1/2 cup kibble a day divided in 2 meals mixed with 1 cup green beans and carrots in FF chicken broth, and 1/2 of the Beneful Prepared Meals so 5oz of the 10oz container. At night she gets a couple low fat Nutro or Blue Dog Bakery dog biscuits before bed. Other than some "horse derived treats" she grabs in the pasture, that's all she eats. Just looking for some honest advice without bias or ridicule. The vet keeps telling me to give her less groceries and I don't think he gets how little she is eating already.

2009-01-13 17:58:45Although it is pricey, I would recommend Science Diet w/d. I worked at a vet and for the longest time I didnt believe in all the pricey foods but after seeing dogs come in that were extremely overweight after eating that, there was an amazing difference. My lab has always suffered from weight problems and Ive tried other lower cost brands of weight management foods and nothing worked. She's been on w/d for a while now and maintains a perfect weight. I do recommend science diet all the way!
