2007-11-26 05:56:18There are two main things you can do to lose weight.
1. Eat less (and clean).
2. Exercise more.
Go to the store and get a heart monitor watch (e.g. Polar or Timex brand) - it will come with a strap that will read your heart rate and calculate how many calories you are burning. Wear that watch for 24 hours on a sedentary day. It will tell you how many calories you burn in 24 hours. That's step 1.
Step 2 - modify your food intake so you eat fewer calories than you take in. This is where the discipline comes in. You want to fill your fridge with stuff you are sure about in terms of calorie content. You can go to websites like www.calorieking.com to educate yourself. Stick with whole foods that are low in fat and low in sugar and don't have ingredients that are hard to pronounce, and aren't processed. Example - breakfast - egg whites and canadian bacon (eat about 1/4 of your daily calories for breakfast) - mid morning - have a piece of fruit ..... lunch - chicken/fish/veggies.... dinner .... chicken/fish/veggies.... once you start giving this some thought, variety is out there. It doesn't have to be painful.
Step 3 - exercise - if you don't have a lot of time, just do 30 minutes a day of walking - walk fast - try to work up a sweat. Read the directions to your heart monitor watch and learn how to raise your heart rate to your optimal level.
Step 4 - keep doing it. It doesn't end. It's a lifestyle choice. If you want hot wings, pizza and beer - that's a lifestyle choice - but you probably won't be in attractive physical shape. If you want to eat clean and exercise, you'll miss out on some of the pizza and beer fun, but you'll probably feel really good and look much better.

2007-11-26 05:54:081. Exercise doesn't have to be structured and at a gym. Things like walking up stairs at work or home all add up, would it be possible to walk to work? or even take a walk with your family or friends at the weekend. Other ideas are parking further away from your destination, and pacing around during adverts on tv or when making dinner/drinks. Buy a cheap pedometer and it will count up the number of steps you do per day. To achieve a good weight loss 10 000 is recommended.
2. Replace all naughty foods with fruit and or veg for snacks both at home and work.
3. Cut out calories your are drinking. Orange juice is not essential for a healthy diet just for you to get vit c! you're taking in roughly 100 cals for one glass. Instead try water, low cal squash or fizzy drinks.
4. Drink alot of water. This works in two ways. a) by filling you up, b) by actually increasing your metabolism. If your body is low in water it will not function as best as it could. Try having it ice cold which will also burn more calories to process.
5. Make new muscle. As we age our muscle does deteriorate year on year. The muscle is what burns the energy even when we are resting. If you can manage to fit exercise in try to make it weight bearing. If this isn't possible take hand held weights or calf weights on walks with you, or wear under your clothes during the day.

Try a high fiber low fat diet, lots of whole grain, veggies and fruit. As for exercise walking is the best and that may mean climbing stairs instead of the elevator, getting up to go talk to someone in the office instead of using the phone. Best investment is a treadmill or stationary bike if you can't get out.
Bottom line you have to use more calories than you take in.
Sometimes you have to force yourself to exercise and that may mean getting up a half hour early and getting on a tread mill while you watch the news on TV or maybe getting on a treadmill when you get home from work as you watch TV, read a book, etc...
In the end it is all about exerecise and discipline there is no magic bullet or potion. One thing is to find a work out/walking/bicycling buddy. I lost over 50 pounds one time when a co-worker and I started walking 2 miles at noon every day.

2007-11-28 01:34:52Have you thought of getting a "buddy". I am 57 and about 40lbs overweight which I find horrible because I used to be so slim and fit. My problem was partly hormonal but mostly because my busy lifestyle just turned into a busier but sedentary lifestyle.
I try to get out to walk the dogs twice a day, but quite honestly it doesn't help that much. My joints are beginning to ache and I have absolutely no stamina. I have totally given up on dieting because it just doesn't work.
This morning I just bought a book/course on the internet http://tinyurl.com/2ssho2 which is designed to help the over 40's not only to lose weight but gain muscle and get fit. I think you need to do some work with this but I don't care, I feel awful now and look just like my 'mum' did - old and fat!

2007-11-26 05:44:04You need to schedule exercise. You need to make the time. It's important for your health and well being. It should not be an option to not exercise. It's a must!
You have to eat healthfully and reduce your portions. (lots of veggies and fruit in proportion to meat and carbs)
No excuses. Make the time to exercise. Do activities that you enjoy. Change your routine from time to time. Be creative.
As long as you are moving, that's what matter. Take it slow and gradually increase. Speak with your doctor because you could injure yourself if you don't.
