Ask:What can do to make losing weight easier

    2007-10-10 10:26:08

Hey all, i have unsuccessfully attempted to begin a weight loss regimen and have failed pretty badly... Im currently about 5Ə" tall and weight about 230-240'ish as of right now... I want to lose at least 30-40 pounds before X-mas and i really would like to eat healthier... I work 9 hours of my day and come home and eat and go to sleep... Any ideas as to what i can do to lose the weight and also maintain a good diet. There are not a lot of places where i can eat around here in downtown Houston and im really just stuck, is there anything anyone can suggest? Thanks.

I was reading in the New York Post that there is a strong possiblity that obeseity is linked to not having enough sleep. Not from watching too much tv or playing video games or diet...

First, please check with your doctor to verify that the specific weight loss plan you decide to follow will be good for you, as every person has different health issues that may need to be considered and some weight loss plans can be quite extreme.
I think the best thing to do based on the info you gave may be to try to eat several small meals a day rather than one large one right before bedtime.
If you work in a place where you can take a quick break a few times a day, you may wish to bring a snack from home with you.
If no refrigeration is available, maybe try protein bars or something else non-perishable from a health food store. A friend lost about 20 pounds in about 2 months by excercising and eating several healthy snacks a day instead of a large meal as she had been doing.
I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

First, I would not suggest that you try to lose 30 pounds in 3 months. That's unhealthy and you'll just gain it back. Set realistic goals for yourself and only weigh yourself every 2 weeks. You should also take measurements of your stomach, arms, thighs, etc. because you may be losing inches even though the scale is not showing any progress. Another thing to remember is that sometimes, you'll go 2 weeks or 3 without much progress but then in the 4th week your body drops 5 pounds all at once. That happened to me and I learned not to get discouraged, just keep on moving and sticking to a healthy diet.
I would start by packing yourself food for the day instead of going out. I bring pretty much the same thing to work every day and eat each thing at around the same time so my body stays full because it knows when to expect food again. It's also easy to shop and pack lunch every morning because there's no decision making.
You should try to eat not more than 1600 calories a day, which works out to about 500 calories for breakfast (30 frosted mini wheats, a banana, and 8 oz of milk), 500 for lunch (half turkey sandwich on wheat, carrots, 2tbsp peanut butter), and 600 for dinner (some kind of lean protein, salad, another 8 oz of milk). I don't eat all of my meal calories at once either. I'll eat my cereal or sandwich, wait an hour or so, then eat the banana/carrots. Only drink water or decaffeinated tea (green or black) because juices and all that have calories but don't fill you up. If you get sweet craving, I bring 2 dark chocolate hershey kisses to work and i suck on them rather than chewing, which makes them last longer and you really taste the chocolate and satisfy that craving. And it's only like 40 calories.
If you want to know how many calories are in foods, good to calorieking.com and they have most foods, including restaurant and fast food items.
The most important thing to do though is to exercise. I know it's hard after a 9 hour day to exercise, but join a gym and go religiously, even if it's only for a half hour. Try eating lunch at your desk and then going for a walk during your lunch hour or heading to the nearby gym to lift weights. Get a set of weights for your house and lift them while you're watching TV.
I lost about 30 pounds a few years ago and i've managed to keep it off with this routine. Good luck!

ok, here's the easiest possible thing for you to do. don't eat til you're full...eat til you're SATISFIED. eat slowly. (if you eat in front of the tv, you're much less aware of what you're eating so you'll keep shoveling it in). try eating with someone so you're engaged in conversation between bites. it takes a long time to explain, but your body doesn't know it's full for 15 minutes after you've been eating. slow down. give your food time to get to your stomach and you'll be amazed how much less you'll eat. also, when you go out to eat, order a size smaller than you want to. it will satisfy your hunger without over-eating.
another thing- i always eat organic food. not because it's particularly lower in fat, but because it's healthier, more expensive and harder to find. don't make food easily accessible, but if you do, make sure it's healthy.
eat fruit...fills you up without all the fat and calories. and if you have a sweet tooth, try dipping fruit in lowfat vanilla yogurt. it's delicious (and i'm a picky eater!)
    good luck!!

Try and take your lunch to work and walk to a park on your lunch break to eat it. Bring stuff like pasta with vegetables and a yummy red sauce that you made the night before. Measure your portions so you're not eating too much. Always take the stairs, return your grocery cart to the front of the store instead of leaving it in the parking lot. Contract your ab muscles at stop lights while you drive. Simple steps like this will get you on the right path. Avoid eating crappy food at all costs! Don't drink soda, even diet soda...carry a big bottle of water with you everywhere you go. Take a quick walk around the block when you get home from work...simple things. Start small and you'll start seeing and feeling the difference. Once you notice small results you'll be ready to take on a more serious challenge like cancelling your cable bill and joining a gym instead. Go for it...it will change your life.

cut in half of what you used to eat, eat more fruit and veggies as snack, drink plenty of water and take One A Day Multivitamin.
I applied it to myself and I lost 40 lbs in 3 months.

Besides the usual eating healthy and moderately, and exercising, the only thing I can suggest is to compete with a friend or someone you know who is also trying to lose weight. I competed with a friend and although she lost the most weight in the given amount of time, which was 3 months, I ended up losing 10 lbs. I was very happy to have lost them 10 lbs. You have to be reasonable, you won't be able to lose 30-40 lbs. in 2 and a half months on your own. Talk to your physician and see what he or she will suggest. Good luck.
