Ask:Is there a difference in walking vs. running when trying to loss weight

    2007-08-30 08:07:20

I've been walking every morning with my kids for 2 weeks now for about 45 minutes daily (a 4 year old and a 2 year old). Before I started exercising I weighed 161 and now I've gained 3 pounds in a half. I've also changed my diet. I have been wondering wether running would be better in order for me to lose weight. Or what is the diffrence as far as results?

    Karla,
One of my first personal training clients was an avid runner. She ran nearly every day, but never lifted weights and ate a lot of carbs - like most runners do.
I had her cut her running in half, had her lift weights three days a week and had her cut her carbs and increase protein and fat slightly.
After one month, she didn't lose an ounce. She was pissed! But you know what. When I took her waist measurement, she lost a full inch around her waist - about six pounds of pure fat.
Please don't use only your bodyweight as a success indicator. Measure your waist today. Write down the number. Then take the measurement every week at the same time, in the same place.
If you were sedentary before beginning to walk, then you start walking, guess what? You're forcing your leg muscles to do something they aren't used to. And when you do that to a muscle, it's first reaction is to grow and get stronger.
Yes. Running will be more physically taxing, but I highly recommend not running for the wear and tear on your joints. I'm sure there are a million people who will disagree.
Also, start doing some weight lifting. It will do more for your weight loss efforts than more cardio will.
    Hope this helps,
    Curtis

the same kinda difference which lies between a wholewheat cracker and a black forest pastry, dude. if u wanna lose weight, R-U-N. it shows better results in a shorter time
    increases ur metabolism
    builds muscle
    increases stamina
    is much more fun
makes u look like a proper athlete, and not one of those nanny-fannies (pls pardon the language) who walk around pretending to be active while all they do is pass gas on two feet.
but if running gives you pains around places, you should go back to BRISK WALKING. BRISK. as in, you should be feeling a little out of breath and please please swing your arms when u walk, burns more calories.

    thankGod

One thing which is definitely happening is that you have been eating more unknowingly because of greater tiredness or may be psychological effect.
Ofcourse, Jogging is better than walking. And running is for them who want to build stamina or are atheletes.
Increase your pace of walking slowly, say take 15 min before you catch a good speed. Also, shorten your pace (speed build to fast walking, jogging and then running) each day, say by a min or 2 only, so that in a month you develop the stamina to jog fast or may be run.
Morning exercises and jogging are meant to benefit your health, so do not over-exhert yourself, as this may mean that you are feeding yourself unknowing. It gen increases appetite.
Firstly, when doing 'exercises, walking, running, jogging', it is very imp. to warm up the body. Generally, one must start mildly sweating, before begining to exercise or walk. So that means, you must walk fast enough to cause you sweating in early morning cool hours.
Once you have warmed up, do your stretching exercises and then take another equal time to relax your body by doing some Yoga breathing exercises or just de-stretch yourself.
Walk back home with the same pace you started from home.
One must not return home tired, but that is happening then probably, you are doing too extremes... either too slow or too rapid with no pace build up.

The following are some suggestions and observations on exercise and weight loss:
The treadmill burns the most calories of standard aerobic machines. It may be particularly effective when used in short multiple bouts during the day. Exercise sessions as short as 10 minutes in duration that are done frequently (about four times a day) may be the most successful program for obese people.
The more strenuous the exercise, the longer the metabolism continues to burn calories before returning to its resting level. This state of elevated metabolism can last for as little as a few minutes after light exercise to as long as several hours after prolonged or heavy exercise.
Resistance, or strength, training is excellent for replacing fat with muscles. It should be performed two or three times a week.
Fidgeting may be very helpful in keeping pounds off. Regular exercise is certainly the best course, but for people who must sit for hours at work, frequently shifting positions while sitting may have some benefit.
It is important to realize that as people slim down, their initial level of physical activity becomes easier and they burn fewer calories per mile of walking or jogging. The rate of weight loss slows down, sometimes discouragingly so, after an initial dramatic head start using diet and exercise combinations. People should be aware of this phenomenon and keep adding to their daily exercise regimen.
As people age, they also need to exercise more to keep off the same amount of weight.
Changes in fat and muscle distribution may differ between men and women as they exercise. Men tend to lose abdominal fat (which lowers their risk for heart disease faster than reducing general body fat). Exercise, however, does not appear to have the same effect on weight distribution in women. A study of women who underwent aerobic and strength training resulted in fat loss in their arms and trunk, but no gain in muscle tissue.
Because obesity is one of the risk factors for heart disease, anyone who is overweight must discuss their exercise program with a physician before starting.
:-) And definitely soon you will recieve more welcoming answers, now that you have posted your question.
    Happy Yahoo'ing!!

Well there is only one major difference. Walkign is a low impact and intensity exercise. For say about a 5km run, you finish in about 25min with your heart rate pumping and body sweating hard.
If you were to walk 5km, you probably take about over 40min but if you were walking at a leisurely pace, your heart rate is not reved up as much as running or jogging. If you think about it, it does not really matter if you run or walk if you cover the same distance . However the truth is that running does give you a more intense workout.
It is researched that doing high intensity interval workouts are better at buring fat. This means walking and breaking out into a jog in intervals of say 10min walk 5 min jog. Repeat this 3 times. As you get fitter jog 10min and run for 5 min. That is the best way to hit the fat reserve. Good luck

running always makes me feel as though I've had a workout. But walking will do it for you, walk up hills and walk fast! You can really get going by just walking. Sometimes running will bring on injury without the right shoes and that's discouraging. Find a good 3 mile route and start running portions of it. I did this and lost 45lbs!

running definitely helps. It builds muscles and burns the same amount of calories as walking the same distance, but in much lesser time. Ive seen amazing results running about 45 - 60 minutes a day... but walking just makes me feel so lazy that i didnt really try it.

Walking a mile burns the same amount of calories as running a mile. But, by running you can cover more distance in a shorter rate of time. So if you walked five miles, it is no different from running five miles...except for the length of time it takes to run verses walking. When exercise is included in a dietary routine, you are most likely to gain weight at first. You are building new muscle which not only is heavier than fat due to its density but your new muscle requires an ample amount of fluids that your body will retain. Your bones are also becoming a tad denser so you are building a stronger body...don't worry about the gain. Take out the tape measure and measure the inches that you are losing.

Gaining weight is common at this stage, and could be for numerous reasons, so don't get discouraged! Most people can fluctuate severall pounds with their water weight alone. Two weeks is not a long enough time to measure accurate weight loss. But as far as a comparison of the two exercises side-by-side, running exerts more energy, so you will burn more calories. However, taking up running on a regular basis requires better shoes, warm-up procedures to avoid injury, and other considerations. You should definitely talk with your doctor so he/she can proclaim you fit to run and give you more tips on how to stay healthy.
