Ask:Does this sound like a good diet plan to lose weight

    2007-09-24 10:35:23

Ok, I am 22 years old...5Ǝ" tall....and I weigh 165 lbs. I want to lose 30 lbs before next summer comes. I don't have the money to pour into these weight loss plans and groups and diet pills and remedies!! I have to do it the old fashion way. So here is the diet I am thinking.
Breakfast: 1 orange and a glass of 1% milk
    Snack: Homemade Fruit Smoothie
Lunch: 1 can of Progresso Soup (I love these!!!!)
Snack: Cheese Slices with Crackers and lowfat Ranch
    Dinner: 500 calorie meal
Late Night Snack: 1 orange and a glass of 1% milk
And if I exercise atleast 30 minutes a day on an eliptical machine.
Do you think I can lose 1-2 pounds a week with this diet or am I dreaming? I really want to lose weight but I don't want to have to go to extremes. Please give me your honest opinion. I appreciate all your help and tips. Thanks!!!

I think it sounds really good and sensible - not like some people who have decided to survive on diet coke.
Maybe cut out the Cheese Slices on Crackers and have fruit instead? And drink lots of water because it makes your appetite lessen!
    Good luck :)

Add up you calories to be sure you are getting at least 1200 calories per day. You are not dreaming as you have included 3 low cal meals and all of your snacks however I would consider making sure you get enough protein in your diet. If you want a good resource book to help you get The Diet For Teenagers Only book. Even though you are not a teen it has everything you need to know in it. I bought it for my daughter as she wanted it and she made me read it so I know it is a good book.

That should definitely work. But let me recommend varying your menu.
I own an elliptical machine. 1/2 hour a day for a few months will work wonders, aside from the diet.

That's a reasonably healthy meal plan, BUT - it would get stunningly boring if you ate it everyday, which would lead you to not stick with it.

Sounds like a nice start. You could also try adding chicken, fish, turkey, and rice to your menu. A salad is also a good choice for lunch. Keep lots of apples, oranges and other fruits around to snack on. Stay away from sweets.

That looks good and will work. The only thing i would recommend is that you add to breakfast and reduce dinner.
i would also do 30-60 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of muscle training. (sit ups, push ups, lunges etc)

you must find something you can live with and really follow, it sounds good, remember , no snacks after 7pm,no fast foods, no junk foods, excerise at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes or more, keep a good attitude,if there's something you really want, have it, but make it small, if you deprive yourself of everything you love always,no diet will work, they say weight watchers or diabetic diets work the best, good luck my dear, you can do it

Drink a lot of water (10 glasses of water aday)
eat a lot of vegetables and fruits.
Don't eat fast food, bread, butter and rice.
The most important thing to do is to exercise at least 1 hour aday.
Stop eating at 6 oclock .. I know a person that was really really fat, and then she stopped eating at 6 oclock and before 6 oclock she can eat whatever she wants but she just stoped eating after 6, and now she lost about 40 pounds but I it just takes time and u want that for next summer so i hope it works.

You need more whole grains, protein, green vegetables and healthy fats. 1-2 pounds a week is very reasonable and shouldn't be a problem. E-mail me if you'd like a diet plan that will actually work and is very healthy.

Eating the same thing over and over for the next year is not realistice. Here are some tools/tips to use...
Step 1: Find out what your basal metabolic rate is. Goto http://health.discovery.com/tools/calcul...
This is the amount of calories you need to eat to maintain your current weight.
Step 2: Do you exercise? Do you exercise right? Exercising right means that you monitor your heart rate and make sure that you reach your target heart rate and maintain it for the longest period of time while exercising. You have two targets a fat burn zone and an cardiovascular zone. The fat burn is usually 60% of your maximum an d is easier to achieve and maintain and if your goal is weight loss this is where you want to be. Just walking/excising is a good start but if you want to get the most out of your work out find out what your target range is. If you don't belong to a gym then I recommend the
Polar Fitness F11 Heart Monitor Watch.
Step 3: You need to decrease your caloric intake or increase the amount of calories your body uses in a day by 500 calories a day for a week to lose 1 pound. So you can decrease that basal number you got in step 1 by 500 calories and exercise very little(yes you still need to exercise). Or you can decrease it by 250 and exercise off 250 calories or any other combination. Remember that your basal number is the amount of calories you body needs to live. If your number were 2400 then your body burn 100 calories per hour. So if you walk for half an hour and burn 300, 50 of that is your basal.
Step 4: Count your calories, it's not hard and you'll find out that you eat a lot of the same things on a daily basis so you won't have to research everything over and over again. Balance what you eat(equal parts carbs and protien whenever possible) . One of the best websites out there is one from the FDA. http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/
This database has almost every food on the planet counted and weighed. (Hint: they do a lot of their weights based on 100grams. If you put 0.28 in the serving size this equals 1 ounce). Get a reliable food scale, preferably digital. Weigh everything that you put in your mouth that is not prepackaged. You need to know what you???re eating and how much you???re eating. The number one mistake is "eating healthy". Everyone thinks because it's "healthy" the portion isn't that important. A handful of peanuts is "healthy" and has nearly 250 calories! Eat enough calories and it won???t matter how "healthy" it is your going to gain weight. Great ideas for people on the go are: South Beach Raisin Granola Bar, Snickers Marathon Multi-Grain Crunch(Wal-Mart diet aid aisle), Snickers Marathon Protein Caramel Nut Rush(Wal-Mart diet aid aisle)
Step 5: Adjustments and Variety. If you are doing your best and losing weight but your starving, increase the amount of calories your giving yourself by 100-200 calories a day. Losing weight and starving are not good bedfellows. If you starve eventually you will crack and lose the battle. The more types of exercises you do the more weight you will lose. You will work more muscles and keep your body guessing.
Step 6(optional): If you belong to a gym or have some free weights at home. Use them! Muscle takes up less space in your body than fat (pound for pound). A pound of fat sits
around and does nothing all day, while a pound of muscle, even at rest burns calories(increasing your basal metabolic rate).
Step 7: Sleep, Never underestimate the power of a goodnight sleep. Will power can crumble in a second if your going through your day tired. You end up with a diminished sense of self control and tend to ???give in??? to temptation.
Step 8: Find a distraction. Read a book, Ride a bike, Play a game. Whatever takes your mind off of food, do it. You will need something that you can turn to in a moment of weakness. Something that will distract you for a half an hour so that your will can reassert itself and help you to make a rational decision.
    Good luck!!!

30 minutes every day on an eliptical would probably burn you anywhere from 350-500 calories (depending on intensity of exercise). If you worked harder and burned say 500 calories in a 30 min workout (I may be higher becuase I weigh 245 so I require more work to do the workout...), then 7 workouts would be 3500 calories or 1 lb in a week (losing 1 lb is 3500 calories). As long as you are giving your body the necessary fuel (when your body needs to eat, it eats muscle before fat), then 1-2 lbs a week is a very reasonable goal, and would be a healthy way to reach your target weight. I would recommend adding at least light resistance workouts to your routine as well (when you do this i.e. lifting weights, your metabolism continues to churn at a higher rate for one to a few hours after your workout, while your metabolism gets back to normal fairly quickly after a cardio workout).
Cucufate made a good point I forgot to mention. Make sure to drink plenty of water.

This sounds like it could work.
The key to shedding pounds each week is to ensure you are burning more calories then you are taking in. Make sure you eat low calorie low fat food and keep track of how many calories you burn on the elliptical machine, if you aren't losing as quickly as you would like maybe mix in a 40-45 minute workout a couple times a week to kick up your calorie burning and you will also feel fit.
    Good Luck!

I think that diet is really good, but it would be better if you eat on sundays only fruits and water. During all the week you must to drink a lot of waer. At least eight glasses every day.
Don't forget to do a lot of exercise, minimum one hour dialy, including weekends.

I think that that is a very good diet I would kick up your caloric intake at dinner just a bit tho, and you may want to think about doing more protien as this will help you build muscle integrity and burn fat. Excersise of course needs to be a part of any healthy diet and you may want to include the protein part in your snacks, do not make your night snack late, and drink tons of water. Hope this helps
P.S. About the no money to use a diet program I have a couple of thoughts, One look into a program that will allow you to not only purchase your products at a discount but also help others lose weight or get healthy and make money.
I listed a couple of websites below. Hope this helps

Try to limit alcohol intake, it makes losing weight difficult.
Exercise is probably more important than diet, over time if you maintain 30 min every day, that alone will very likely make you lose about a pound every 2 weeks by itself. Though exercise converts some fat into muscle so at first exercise and at the same time expected weight loss wont happen.
The diet seems good though at 5Ǝ" I would say you probably look really good right now at 165 lbs. Though you would probably feel more attractive at 150.
I would say if dinner is 500 calories then all should be good with the meal, though a 500 calorie frozen meal tends to slow down metabolism. Eating steamed vegetables with grilled or baked chiken breast for dinner is a good meal choice. Also eating canned tuna fish and steamed veggies is good as well. Another good dinner is a 4 ounce portion of salmon with some vegetable placed inside an aluminum foil pouch and cooked in oven for 20 minutes on 375.
Also make sure to avoid sweets, chips, sweet drinks like soda and such.
Some people find better results by eating a protien bar for breakfast.
Also 10 glasses of water a day is too much, a person should drink around 32 ounces of water a day, thats about 3 or 4 glasses. Filling yourself with water tends to make you feel bloated and also can make you hungry as the stomach is full, but has nothing to digest.

Young lady. You need structure in your daily eating habits. This is a way of life. Not just some thing you nibble on now and then. If you really want to maintain your body in a long term and caring way....join Weight Watchers ! Don't be stubborn and think you know it all. That will be your downfall.
Weight Watchers has been around for a long, long time. Why? Because it works ! My first week in the 26 week program I lost 8 1/2 pounds !
Call your local W.W. for details. You will be glad you did.
You will thank me in the long run !

I don't see any veggies in your diet, so it's not healthy. You can look on-line and find some healthy diets that include all the food groups you need and still be able to lose weight. I highly recommend Weight Watchers. They are offering free registration now, so even if you joined and got the program down, you could continue on your own without paying.
For me, Weight Watchers was the only way I ever lost weight.
    Good luck to you!
