Ask:Four Questions on Weight Loss Plateaus

    2008-05-30 08:12:04

I have reduced my calorie in take to 1600 a day, but if it turns out that I'm losing over 1lb a week, I will increase it as with me, weight loss works best when done slowly.
    1) Will you eventually get out of it if you do not change anything?
    2) Is it only when your body is at the 'right' weight?
    3) Can adjusting calories (300 less one day 300 more the other) really help?
    4) How long do you think it takes to get out of the plateu?
Please, do not lecture me to excercise as I am beginning a running program in a couple of weeks.

#1.) Yes, just keep up the hard work.
#2.) Not necessarily, your body is constantly evolving based on the environment you subject it to. Take body builders as an example.
#3) Absolutely, actually try increasing by 300/day for a few weeks, I think you will be surprised.
#4.) It really depends, I can tell you to help bust out of it, switch up your calories like above. Also do high-rep (12-15) weight lifting a few days per week.
Monitor your body fat percentage as the scale does not tell the whole story. Muscle weighs more than fat so don't just look at pounds.
If you get lathargic or anything else, you need to eat more. Keep a diet high in protein and do not cut out carbs. You will especially need lots of food and carbs when you begin your running.
Keep up the good work and stay focused on your goals!
    Hope this helps,

Yeah thats what happened to me. I was losing weight quite well through a very low cal diet of fish no weat etc. i lost about 10 pounds in just under 3 weeks!! But then my body adjusted to the low cals i was giving it and it ment that i could bearly get out of the bed in the morning and always felt lathargic etc. Then i wasnt losing any more weight cause my body wouldnt let me. So i went back to what i was eating before. I think the idea to dieting well is to trick your body with different combinations of callorie intake and exercise every week providing that the amount of callories you burn is always greater than what you intake.

Although we all hate weight loss plateaus, they are actually a good thing. It's no so much that you have reached your body's right weight as much as your body is getting use to this weight.
So if you do start gaining weight for any reason it will usually stop at your last plateau.
Your plateau can break on it's own but it does take a long time. One thing that you may not realize is that sometime a plateau can be broken just by upping the amount of water you drink.
Sometimes when we lose weight but are a bit dehydrated, the cells are filled with carbon waste (from burning fat) and until those cells get cleared out you can't burn any more fat. If you are not drinking 8 glasses of water a day, now it the time. If you are drinking 8 glasses, add in one more during the day.
You may also want to add half a lemon to one of your water glasses. It helps to cleanse the cells (get rid of carbon waste) and also will get rid of any water retention you may have. Don't use bottled lemon juices just fresh lemon.
You right to lose the weight slowly. This way you'll be less apt to gain it back and you also won't be left with saggy skin which some get when they lose too quickly.
You are right about shifting your calories from day to day. When your body receives the same amount of calories daily it burns what it thinks it will receive, but by varying the calories you body doesn't know what it will receive so it burns it as it needs it.
Since you are adding running shortly, you'll see your weight actually go up a bit. Don't be concerned - your just building lean muscle and it weights more than fat.
So when you start step away from the scale and judge your weight by the way your clothes fit. It will help you not get frustrated if the scale goes up and the way you look and feel is much more important than what a scale shows.
    Good luck!
