2007-06-23 05:02:31I have been living in China for the last 10 months and have lost weight. I think its because "real" Chinese food consists of a lot more veggies and less meat and fat than the typical American diet. Some of my students tell me that there are days where they would not eat any meat as part of their meals. They also eat a lot of tofu and such. Also, as a typical American I used to drive everywhere. You will find you walk more here. Most people here don't own a car and either take the bus or bike around town. You would be surprised with how much weight you would lose if you just walk a few blocks to a bus station or to the store instead of drive everywhere.

2007-06-22 08:02:47come on , you will love it , try it.
By the way, the chinese food you ate in north american can hardly be considered chinese by chinese.
Don't regret after you return home

2007-06-21 15:45:54I did! It was mainly from walking and staying active more as well as better eating habits such as eating more veggies than meat.

2007-06-21 09:04:04I guess most would be overwhelmed by the authentic Chinese food and start gaining weigth in the first few weeks then.. it became a problem and they have to try to loose weight!

2007-06-21 11:05:07Proper Chinese portions tend to be quite small so this may be one reason. 99% of food is fresh too which must make quite a difference. By the way, sushi (sashimi) is Japanese not Chinese.

2007-06-21 09:29:36I think the big difference is that you take a little translation book so you can point out what to order, half a page of dishes is enough. Everything is there and very nice to eat. But if not people will friendly choose for you but you get really scared what it might be and start to live on snacks. Same thing for many things to do really, the 'chinese on holiday' it makes the difference.

2007-06-23 08:55:52I went to China for three months. The first month I was there I definitely lost weight due to all the stress. "Real" Chinese food is different than north american Chinese food. A lot of the food offered to me in the first few days was not appealing and my stomach rejected nearly everything at first (except rice). (And I like Chinese food here). After the intial stress wore off I began to find what I liked. Although I lost 5-10 pounds in the first 2-3 weeks by the time I left I think I was pretty much back to the same weight I was when I first arrived.
Best of luck!

2007-06-21 11:11:39Almost everyone I know who has been did lose weight. The amount of physical activity combined with healthier food makes a big difference. In the three weeks I was there, I lost probably 5 pounds.
