I have researched a pill called 'Hoodia'. Its an extract from a cactus plant that helps reduce the urge for food. Has anyone used these pills or recommend any others, if any?

The Hoodia cactus can work wonders. However mass producing the effects of the cactus in pill form has proven unsuccessful. They cannot get it to work.
I believe there is a drug company that is working on it recreating the benefits of it into a weight loss pill, however that pill is not expected to be on the market for a year or more.
Some years ago, a South African scientific research organization isolated the appetite-suppressing ingredient in Hoodia and patented it. The organization licensed the patent to a small British firm called Phytopharm, which then sold it to Pfizer, the giant pharmaceutical firm. Pfizer hoped to create a diet pill containing the Hoodia compound, but the plan to isolate and synthesize the ingredient proved more difficult than expected, and not cost-effective. So now, Phytopharm has the patent back and has established Hoodia plantations in South Africa. The company plans to market a diet product containing Hoodia by about 2007.
If Pfizer is having a hard time doing it, I cant imagine it will
be that easy to re-create. Dont waste your money.

I have in the past i have used Adios they only work if your dieting
So is it the dieting not the pill !
When i have taken them and not ate any extra but was not dieting they have made no difference
So in my opinoin they really dont work its dieting that makes you lose weight not the diet pill
Remember the people who sell these pills will try to convince us they work so they can get richer
spend your money on healthier foods instead

    been there done it !!

Yes I have used them, and no they do not work.. they might appear to be working, but you gain the weight right back if you do not change eating habits. And I am not into heart flutterings when you take them. Diet pills are not good for your heart.

    3 words - DON'T DO IT!
The best way to lose weight is to make a food diary and cut down your calories. No only is this the healthiest way and has the highest success rate, but it TEACHES you something. That means that when you've lost the weight, you'll know how many calories are in certain things, and you'll have a good feel about what you can eat in a day.
Weight loss pills work by speeding up your metabolism. You usually have to take about 4 per day though to get the effects. But honestly, the danger is that once you start using them you won't be able to stop. If you're losing say 6lbs per week (very bad for you) to begin with, you're not going to stop if it means you'll start losing at a healthy rate of 1lb a week, are you really? It's just too tempting to carry on with.
I know it's hard and frustrating, but it's better to change your eating habits and learn how to deal with hunger cravings rather than essentially 'cheat' yourself out of losing weight properly.
Besides which, the body needs snacks throughout the day to remain stable. So even if you don't feel hungry because of the pills, your body will be crying out for food. It may also suppress your appetite so much that you are never hungry and so you hardly eat. If that happened, your metabolism would be likely to slow down, and you'd actually end up storing fat and be unable to shift the weight. Pills mess with your body's natural rythms.
The website below is really helpful! If you follow it and exercise daily, you can lose weight healthily without needing pills. Imagine how much more proud of yourself you'll be if you can tell people you did it through sheer hard work?
    Good luck hun!

Without wishing to seem impolite Type ' weight loss ' into the search for questions box and you will see the answers to the 20 questions like yours that clutter ' Answers ' every day, together with their standard answers.
Type in also ' Answers swamped with weight loss questions!?' and you will see what regular contributors thing of this problem.
As far as weight loss is concerned I will give my stock answer I am afraid, however it is interesting to see how close this is ( I have been using it for over 2 months), to a recent paper from University of California. They did a meta-analysis of all the work on weight loss over the past few years. ( summary) It showed that 2/3 of people who diet yo-yo to a higher weight, none of the faddy diets of diet pills work and that rapid weight loss doubles heart attack risk!
They seemed to suggest the only hope was modest calorie reduction + EXERCISE.
This is a news report of the article:
    http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/health/...
I have to admit I have a 'stock' answer for this question, since if you look it appears 20-30 times every day!!!
Type 'guaranteed weight loss' into google, you will find 1 1/2 million sites!
Look around you if ANY of these things worked would we be getting so overweight?
We are what we eat, but we are at least as much what we don't do. Calorie intakes in 1900 and 1950 were higher than they are now, we just don't use them up!
Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg. Drop to about 1,500 calories.
Take a healthy amount of exercise 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise per day 4-5 days a week. I hate to think what percentage of the UK population does that 2%? 5%?
I have seen hundreds of questions with this same pattern :- I am fat, tell me where on line I can get this super diet or herbal/dangerous/illegal drug that I hear will fix it for me in 10 minutes without the need for me to get off the couch!
No fixes pal , less in more out, its the only way!

Weight loss pills are not recommended unless directed by a well-trained physician. They mix poorly with other drugs (especially antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications) and often result in illness and gastrointestinal problems. Many of them are metabolism enhancers, some are appetite suppressants. The safest I've seen in my own research is Xyience, but even as a perssonal trainer I didn't recommend it to any clients. There are better ways to suppress appetite and boost metabolism. Consult your doctor.
