Ask:I have to Have Surgery to Correct a Previous Weight Loss Surgery. How Can I Keep This From People
2006-11-17 20:22:562 and a Half years ago I had Lap Band weight loss surgery. It was done by two Docs that had good reputations and after a couple years of research, they were the only ones that took my insurance. They completely screwed up the surgery and I never lost weight, so I didn't have to tell friends. Only my family knows. Now I am in extream pain and having a surgery to try to repair it. This time I have one of the best Doctors in the world operating on me.
The thing is I don't want some people to know that I'm having a correction to weight loss surgery. When I had the first surgery, I was riduculed by several people saying that I took the easy way out. Believe me, it hasn't been easy. I've tried every diet in the world plus having a nighmare surgery and months of pain only to be told by those who know that it is my own fault.
It's going to take several weeks to recover. What do I tell the people that won't understand, like aquaintences, coworkers, & some of my friends that just don't get It??

2006-11-17 20:31:20People that have never struggled with something like this will NEVER understand, and it is NOT an easy way out. My husband and I both had Gastric Bypass surgery almost 4 years ago. I heard too many bad things about the Lap-band surgery so I knew that is not what I wanted. I had people tell me that diet and exercise would help, but it didn't. I was diabetic and had several miscarriages because of it. My husband was diabetic and had nuropothy in his feet that was so severe he could barely walk. His blood pressure was extremely high. A lot more insurance companies are covering this surgery now because they are beginning to realize how much money they will be saving in the long run on prescription medications. I have not had to have an insulin shot since about 5 months after my surgery. If you have health problems just tell them that the surgery is going to save your life. You don't really need to offer them an explanation.

2006-11-17 21:41:09You, as you are right now, are the best, most perfect combination of all the genes that it took to make you, all the circumstances that've happened to get you where you are, all the things you've learned and discovered that've formed who you are, you, just as you are right now are the best combination of all that stuff that got you where and who you are right now. There is nothing wrong with you.
And i believe that when ppl have set backs, they don't just have set backs and then no way to overcome them, there is always a way for them to rise above the things that could drag them down, and the more set backs you have, that points out how much more strength you have.
So you are wonderful, there is no getting a better you. It's impossible, you are the absolute best, and no one could ever do any better. You take the cake. And any weaknesses you have, those are opportunities that you have where you can show yourself that you can overcome them. Things like sabotaging yourself, it's a hard habit to kick, but i know it can be done, and when you do, that's your weaknesses, don't compare yourself with somebody else who got over that weakness sooner, or maybe never had it, because they don't have all your same weaknesses, nor do they have all your same strengths. And when you defeat something that is very strong like that, that is a huge victory, no one can steal your thunder by having less of a struggle with it, because they are not you and you are the best you there can ever be

2006-11-17 20:28:25This is no ones business but yours. You aren't obligated to tell them anything. You could simply say you required a surgical procedure but don't wish to speak about it. They'll assume it was quite personal. Let them think what they will. It's your life and your happiness at stake.
I sincerely hope you have the success with this repair that you were looking for with the original surgery. Having had weight issues most of my life I can tell you I DO understand.

2006-11-17 20:28:14You do not owe an explanation to ANYBODY. Simply say that you have surgery for a "heatlh issue." Most wil leave that alone. For those who push you can say, "I don't want to talk about it, this is personal," or "I had a belly button transplant and I hope my body does not reject it!"

2006-11-19 03:44:21Gastric bypass surgery: Can it be redone if you regain weight?
What happens if you regain weight after gastric bypass surgery? Can it be redone?
- Kate / Texas
Mayo Clinic dietitian Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., and colleagues answer select questions from readers.
Answer
Gastric bypass surgery usually isn't redone ??” unless there is a medical complication resulting from the procedure. If you regain the weight that you initially lost after gastric bypass surgery, you typically have to lose the weight the old-fashioned way ??” by reducing your calorie intake and increasing your physical activity.
The goal of gastric bypass surgery is to promote significant and lasting weight loss in severely overweight individuals who have been unable to achieve or maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise. However, gastric bypass is not a miracle procedure. It doesn't guarantee that you'll lose all of your excess weight or that you'll keep it off long term. The success of this surgery depends in big part on your commitment to follow a healthy diet and a regular exercise program after gastric bypass.

I had gastric bypass surgery in April 2005. I started out at 268, now I???m 180 and holding, after 1 year and 7 months. These links will help you in many ways to make a decision if this is for you or not. I vote yes, because it made such a difference in my life. I was taking 8 pills a day, and after my surgery, I lost my diabetes. The way they do the surgery, takes your diabetes away. I no longer have to take glucophage, and I no longer have high Cholesterol or high blood pressure. I???m down to 2 pills a day. I went from a size 26-28 to a 16-18.
Most people struggle with paying for the surgery. Go to this site, it is a great support system for you, because it???s only people who have had gastric bypass. Every insurance program has been rated, and you???ll get tips on how to deal with your insurance company, as well as, surgery tips, food tips, and just support. http://www.obesityhelp.com/
There is a very good web site by a guy named Basil White. He???s a govt. worker and a comedian. He walks you through everything. Very interesting. He had the surgery and did well.

2006-11-17 20:29:46Just tell them you need a break and you would like to stay at home for a few months before taking up a job again. If you dont tell people they wont know about the surgery. In any case there is no need to bother about what people say or think.
