2008-02-28 05:33:36You need to primarily look at your diet first. I have a hormonal problem which means that weight loss is a very moot point with me as i have to be extra careful with it. It means i have to watch exactly what i eat every day, count calories, cut out junk, fast foods, processed foods (which i do).
Firstly, make a diary of everything you eat for the next week. I mean EVERYTHING. From breakfast, to fruit, to snakcs and even down to what you drink. You mustn't leave out anything. Then work out the calories in each thing, and write the totals at the bottom of the page. Now without knowing your height and weight i wont tell youhow many calories you should be taking in per day but i will say that if you find your meals and snacks are mostly made up of: cereal bars, chocolate, anything that comes in a box (excpet cereal), alcohol, chips, take aways, bakery foods - then you need to change your diet, because all these foods provide you with fats that store inside the body and are very hard to shift.
Another thing is your portion sizes - you may only have 3 meals a day but are those meals huge plates piled high? A better idea is to have around 6 small 'meals' a day, or at least more than 3, and make portion size at least half of what you're to (this is only for people who have huge portions, if thats not you then don't change your sizes - last thing i want is someone starving from my advice!).
Without knowing your age, height and weight and if you have any health problems it makes it very hard to go into detail. What i will do is list here the sorts of things i have to go through with my diet - this is just the food part of things, then there's the exercise too :)
Your Diet should:
1) Consists of 90% fresh food and non processed (junk) food
2) Have veg and fruit in it
3) Allow for at least 4 pints of water a day (if not more!). Water speads up fat loss by fuelling the processess that cause it.
4) Have regulated portion size
5) Should be interesting! Just because you're watching your weight doesn't mean you can't eat nice things, but make sure you take into account how much they cost in calories and be prepared to either see a little weight gain or to counteract it with lowering calories form somewhere else.
6) Should have at LEAST 3 (better to have more) meals a day.
Once you've looked at your diet and have decided if you need to change things there, then the next stage is to make a food diary for a couple of weeks (preferably 4 weeks). get a little notepad just for this, it will motivate you much more than having to find bits of paper to write on all the time. You need to jot down every day the name of the food you ate and how many calories it costs. Then once a week weigh yourself, and continue for 4 weeks. Be careful not to become obsessed with calories though! I've seen that rule too many people's lives, and I for one find that sad. This is just for you to see that lowering calories or changing your diet will give you results on the scales and motivate you into continuing.
Once your diet is changed suitably your body will begin to understand what you want and, if you REALLY need to, you will loose weight. Please though, look up your weight on a chart and if you are within your perfect bracket then stay there - its your health that matters more, and dropping too much weight will leave you far worse off just for the sake of being able to fit onto those size 8 jeans. I'm around size 14 and have to abttle every day with how and what i eat and making a careful balance between diet and exercise (and sleep!). I'm on a good track now and i'm following the same rules i've placed in this email so i'm practising my preaching :)
Once your diet is down and you're happy with what you eat then you can start looking at varying your exercise routine. Walking and running are favourites (they bore me though). I have a gym pass and use rowing and cycling machines for cardio, then hit the weights (i'm looking to gain muscle, but weights are very good for toning if done the right way). At home you can do crunches, curls (with tins of beans if necessary, as i had to once upon a time), sit ups, push ups, wall press, jogging on the spot, dancing or workout from a home dvd...the list is endless. Even YouTube has tonns of workout vids (most are only 10 mins long but it gives you ideas).
The most important thing is diet and exercise must be balanced - you wont loose wieght just watching your diet alone, and same with working out. Do remember though that if you are spending at least an hour working out, you may have to raise what you eat as your body still needs to sustain itself.

Please don't believe people like the one below me who claim you can loose 29 lbs in a month. This is EXTREMELY dangerous for your body and you will cause far more harm then good by doing it. The most you should be loosing a week is about 5lbs, i average about 2-3lbs a week at the moment. Slow loss keeps the weight off, fast loss will make you regain fast, basically as soon as you stop drinking the shakes or taking the pills (which are mostly scam pills anyway). Be sensible!
