I was thinking of taking kickboxing classes to try to lose weight and tone up. Has anyone taken these classes before? And would you recommend them?

Oh, man, does it ever work! I started taking kickboxing in January and it is the fastest I have ever seen my body change. It is definitely the hardest workout I have ever done, and I'm pretty tough. I am a runner first and foremost, but kickboxing has created an endurance for other sports that I have never been able to maintain before. My muscles toned up super-fast and I lost weight even faster. I think the key is taking the class from someone who isn't afraid to make you sweat. Go to an American Taekwondo Association or similar for your classes rather than an LA or 24 hour Fitness-type place. I was much happier taking my classes from a Master teacher.

The training itself is brilliant for Cardiovascular work-outs-my mate does it and is as toned and fit as a butcher's dog-Wish I was 10 years younger-I'd have a go-Unfortunately have to make do with cycling, swimming or golfing these days-if you are under 35-then just do it-you won't regret it!!-If you don't want to get in and fight you don't have to-most reputable gyms will be happy to let you train with the fighters!!

In general, yes, because the level of aerobic exercise is high and as a bonus it uses both upper and lower body muscle groups (unlike some aerobic activities like running or cycling).
However, visit the classes in advance of enrolling to see how the instructors really work students. After the initial instruction about techniques, how much intense activity do students regularly put out and for how long? True weight loss aerobic exercise needs to be sustained for 20-30 minutes a session to have any significant impact.
If the classes you have in mind have long sparring sessions, strong work ethic, etc., yes it would be great. If you're standing around a lot idle, then of course no, while the sport may be good for weight loss, the specific class you have in mind may not be the one you're looking for.
    Hope that helps.
    Best to you.
