Ask:Kitten wont eat Kitten food and tries to eat Weight Loss food
2008-07-10 09:33:25Help! I got a new kitten a few weeks ago and he's a treasure but he keeps trying to eat my old cat's (10 years old) weight loss food!
I feed them twice a day, and seperate them, I put the kitten in his room and feed him, and I feed the older cat downstairs, once the older cat is done eating her food, I open the door and let them together. Problem is that the kitten never finishes his food, not even close, he eats a couple of bites and then wants to run downstairs and eat the weight loss food! I'm worried because I think that it might not be good for him since he needs a lot of calories as a kitten.
Thanks everyone!

2008-07-10 09:39:34I would switch the kitten food to another brand or another variety. Or you could try mixing the kitten's food with the weight loss food together.

2008-07-10 09:40:18remove the older cat's food once you let the kitten out. that way it won't have a choice but to eat the kitten food... or maybe put some water on the kitten food to moisten it and make it a little more appetizing.
good luck!

2008-07-10 09:42:07it isn't good for your kitty, it is way too high in carbs. In fact, it isn't that good for your older over weight kitty either. Cats are carnivores and need meat to survive. Food manufactures fill cat food with starches and grains because it is cheaper. If you want your older cat to loose weight, feed it kitten food! honestly. It is high in protein, low in carbs, and your kitty will get all the nutriants it needs so it won't be malnurished (which happens on dry) nor will it be dehydrated (well that is if the kitten food is canned food)
The pet food manufactures actually trick cats into eating their foods by spraying them with fats and other chemicals that make them tasty. I equate dry food with McDonald's foods or sugary snacks and chips for humans. Loaded which chemicals you don't need, and covered with flavorings you can't resist :)
Don't believe me, check out http://www.catinfo.org a website run by a vet who actually studied feline nutrition. She has a great section on feline obesity..
and starting your kitten off on a species appropriate diet (aka not kibble) will help him stay healthy in the long run

2008-07-10 09:42:57It's very important that your kitten gets the right amount of calories it needs to grow. my cats did this, too.
I put my kitten into the bathroom with it's proper food for about an hour or until it ate it's real food and the older cat can eat in peace. It would be a better idea to not keep the two foods together so the cats dont get confused. Then I put the two foods where none of the cats can get to it. I kind of monitered thier eating habits until my kitty grew out of it.
hope this helped

2008-07-10 09:46:34try giving the older cat small amounts at a time, in a seperate room, that he will finish in one sitting, and just feed him when he seems to be hungry (generally a handful three or four times a day). make sure he is only fed when he is hungry or he will inevitably leave food for your little guy to gobble up. also, buy some kitten treats for your fluffy baby- they have a lot of calories and are packed with nutrition he will need. as long as he eats enough, he should be ok, but you're right- weight loss food isnt his best option :) he is eating it simply because he likes it (aww how cute is he?!), so maybe try mixing a little bit of a new kitten food in with his, see if he likes it, and give him more and more of that food, phasing out his old food-it seems he just doesnt like the kitten food as much as the older guy's food. good luck with your babies :)

2008-07-10 09:50:41Well, you could try hand feeding your kitten, holding it up to his nose, and letting him sniff it, and then have him eat it. Maybe you should keep it so that he can only get to his kitten food, then he will finally give up on trying to get the weight loss food, and just eat it. I don't know if worse comes to worst, then it probably wouldn't hurt for him to eat the weight loss food.

2008-07-10 09:54:13After the older cat eats, put the kitten food where the weight loss food is and put the weight loss food away. Plain and simple.
