2007-10-15 09:19:24My doctor told me that any weight loss method that requires pills, shakes, meals, or bars is not the way to permanent weight loss. I lost 75 lbs in a little over 7 months by increasing fruits and veggies, changing to whole grains, and minimizing fat and refined sugar. Also, I'm a vegetarian and I exercise every day. But the point is that I did not starve myself or take pills. And my cholesterol went down 22%, and my blood pressure dropped from medium-high to low-medium.
The reason why diets and pills don't work is because you lose the weight (sometimes a lot of it) in a short period of time. They don't focus on change of lifestyle. So as soon as you reach your goal, you go back to your old eating and exercise habits, and you can very quickly gain weight. The first time I did this, I gained all my weight back plus another 20 pounds!
If you are eating 1500 calories a day and getting at least 30 minutes of cardio and 20-30 minutes of strength training six days a week, you will lose about 2-2 1/2 pounds a week (more at first). If after the first month or so you are still losing more than this, you'll probably want to step up your calorie consumption. Losing weight too quickly is really unhealthy, not to mention that almost everyone who does it gains it back very quickly. Also, you will end up with sag.
I am not a trainer, nutritionist, doctor, or nurse. I strongly recommend you consult your doc before starting ANY diet or exercise program. Best of luck!
