Ask:my summer weight loss please help
2007-06-20 13:07:46I have 9 weeks to lose 40 pounds. I don't want anyone to talk down on me, just answer my questions and educate me. I'm walking 5 hours a day, at number 3 on the treadmill. that means 3 miles an hour = 15 miles a day. I only eat once a day and I have salad with light dressing. And I drink loads of water.
I'm 5Ɗ 1/2, 16 years old, and 168 pounds.
1. do you think I'll drop the weight I want to lose?
2. losing 40 pounds the unhealthy way...will it make me the same size as losing it the healthy way?
3. I know i'll be less toned and lose muscle, can I make it up by doing an hour of weights and stretches each day?
please help =(

2007-06-20 13:26:33The first thing I want to suggest is that you follow your avatar: LOVE THE SKIN THAT YOU ARE IN.
Yes, I understand that you want to lose weight. But, the way you are doing it is destroying your body. The weight will come off if you simply eat right (3 balanced meals and 2 healthy snacks) and exercise (1 - 1 1/2 hours of vigorous exercise). If you were to follow this plan, you could easily drop 25 pounds in 9 weeks. The 40 pounds is unrealistic, unhealthy and very damaging to your body.
If you destroy your metabolism, you will end up GAINING weight, which you definitely do not want to do. All that you are doing is sending your body into starvation mode (it is trying to find energy to keep up with all of your exercising) - so anytime you eat, it will hold onto the food, rather than burn it. Plus, I GUARANTEE you can not keep this up for the long term, so once you stop, you are going to eat and eat and eat.
Stick my earlier suggested plan - take it slow, eat right and exercise appropriately. If you lose 25 pounds. people will notice and you will look awesome, which is what I am assuming you want.

2007-06-20 13:22:33you are doing it all wrong. If you want to loose it really fast theres no healthy way but theres a way with causing less harm to your body then you are doing now.
1. DONT EAT ONCE A DAY. By doing that you are training your stomach and its saying "she is starving me, let me just store twice as many calories" besides you need fuel (from food) to burn the calories(the weight). So your solution is , eat every 2-3 hours even if its just a piece of carrot. EAT BREAKFAST that'll prevent hunger and cravings during the day. If you have a relly strong will dont eat sugar (at all) if not, indulge your self with either a chocolate or ice cream but make sure its worth the calories and then walk for about an hour. (ex: you are coming home from school/work, you want sugar, have a frozen fruit bar instead of the fav. ice cream and walk while eating it instead of taking the bus)
2. DONT OVEREXCERSICE. 5 hours a day??? thats a bit obssessive besides it wont do you any good. Start with a an hour and INCREASE the target only then will you be training your body to loose weight. Do other things besides running/walking. Go rolleblading or ride a bike or do push ups/sit ups/cruinches etc..basically change the routine one in a while that way your body excersices all of the taget zones and it wont get used to the work out...
3. Keep Drinking water , thats the only correct thing you do.
Good luck on your weight loss you'll achieve it in no time of you do it correctly!

2007-06-20 13:25:04ok so i REALLY recommend you NOT to do that diet.
yeah of course you'll lose tons at first, but trust me, you'll regain all your weight and extra the moment you crack... cuz you can't live like that your whole life. what about christmas and thanksgiving and stuff?
plus, you might even be disgusted when you see you don't LOSE weight but GAIN in muscle. i know someone who's been doing a lot of sport to lose weight and who now has a lot of muscle but didn't lose fat.
i recommend you just change your food habits. don't starve yourself and 5 HOURS OF TREADMILL? that's crazy! do half an hour every 3 days or you might hurt yourself. when you've been doing it for long enough (more than 5 months) THEN you can start doing it more often every day.
for your food habits, eat fruits and bread with butter and a glass of milk for example every morning (that's when you have to eat the most), then for luch, try pasta salad, something that'll make you full at least 5 hours. then, don't snack nor eat a heavy meal for dinner. and cut out on sugar for dinner as well.
but just one last thing, DON'T eat the same thing everyday, change. and also, if you're hungry and feel like eating, maybe it's because you're thristy. so drink a lot (at least 1 liter and a half per day)
THERE! hope this helps! and good luck on that. my summer break resolution is also to lose 10 kg :)

2007-06-20 13:40:05if you want to try HerbaLife. My dad tried it and lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks.

2007-06-20 13:20:51i would suggest a couple of small meals a day versus one larger one to keep your glucose level from dropping - keep it more on an even keel
also only eating one meal a day may put your body on starvation mode - where your metabolism slows to try to conserve its resources
eat a good multi vitamin and drink water
i's also suggest not being stuck on losing 40 lbs as you may reach the body size and shape being a higher weight. You should go by how you feel and how your clothes feel rather than a specific number on the scale. the same weight will look different on people depending on their build, their muscle mass, their bone structure and how they carry the weight.
i know you dont want anyone to talk you down, but 40 pounds in 9 weeks is AWFULLY extreme.
good luck and be careful

2007-06-20 13:19:57Yikes!--You are going to seriously burn your body out! You will not drop weight as quickly as you think by skipping meals. Your body will go into starvation mode and everything you eat will be stored as calories, because it does not know when it will get food again.
The water is good. Drink atleast 8-10 glasses.
Eat 5 small meals a day. This speeds up your metabolism.
Don't just eat salad, it gets boring, and your body needs more then that to function. If you have salad add some grilled chicken, or ham, or turkey and a small handfull of cheese or reduced fat cheese.
Breakfast is important. It jumpstarts your metabolism and gives you the energy you need for excercise.
You don't want to lose muscle..that is what burns the fat!
Walking on the treadmill is great cardio. Pick a goal that you can truly stick to...or you are just setting yourself up for failure. Start out at 30-45 minutes per day. Then add a little time the next week...OR increase your speed. Do you really think you are going to look forward to walking 5 hours a day?
Also, by eating once a day you setting yourself up to binge. You don't want to feel so hungry that you can't control yourself and just eat a whole bunch.
Trust me, I have lost weight after each of my 5 kids...Do it sensible. That way you can stick to your plan and know that the weight will stay off. When I have felt desperate and tried to lose in an unhealthy way the weight ALWAYS came back...alot faster than I lost it. Good Luck...contact me if you wanna chat : )

2007-06-20 13:31:29you'll most definitely lose weight doing it that way, but i'd be afraid that you will put your body into starvation mode. it is very likely that when you go back to eating normally you will balloon up to be even heavier than when you started losing. one thing about doing it the healthy way is that it's much easier to keep it off.
count calories! i would recommend eating at least 1000 calories a day to stop that from happening. i assume that your body uses about 1900 calories a day. mathematically speaking if you ate around 1100 calories per day, and exercised vigorously for about an hour daily, you would lose AT LEAST 2 pounds a week. every 500 calories that your body uses that you don't eat is equal to one pound of weight loss. I would alternate cardio and toning, so maybe use a yoga ball every other day and use treadmill the other days.
it will be a lot easier to do, and a lot easier to keep the weight off. i tried a crash diet and workout routine similar to the one you are doing and just wound up gaining weight afterwards. i lost over 70 pounds the way i describe and have kept it off for 2 years.

2007-06-20 13:21:19Question? Why are you eating only once a day? Are you trying to dig an early grave. Please don't do this to yourself. Just eat healthier stuff. Like fresh fruit in the morning (pears, plums, apples, and bananas are good). Have a salad for lunch using spray dressing (healthier and containing less calories than the goop). For dinner try buying those "Smart Choice" or "Lean Cuisine" or even just a chicken Caesar salad (with spray dressing if any at all). Keep exercising though. This is the diet I've been using for the past month and I've lost about 20 pounds (I know, you're probably wondering why I only lost that much. I exercised even more such as lifting weights and running so some of the weight is muscle. Oh, and chocolate is a major no-no. It increases hunger level and helps you gain weight faster. Good luck!

2007-06-20 13:13:30YOU DON'T WANT TO LOOSE THAT MUCH WAIT THIS FAST.... TAKE YOUR TIME, BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOU WILL BE THE SIZE YOU WANT TO BE. I HOPE YOUR NOT LOOSING THE WAIT FOR SOMEBODY ELSE. LOOSE IT FOR YOURSELF.... KEEP DRINKING LOTS OF WATER. YOU DON'T WANT TO STOP EATING EITHER.. THAT WILL BE BAD FOR YOU. EAT ALL YOUR MEALS
AND JUST CUT THE PORTIONS IN HALF FROM WHAT YOU USUALLY WOULD EAT.
I LOST ALOT OF WAIT ONE TIME, EATING OATMEAL EVERYTIME I GOT HUNGRY.

2007-06-20 13:16:32Okay, you said you don't want anyone to "talk you down" and I'll try not to, but you want honest advice, yes?
I'm not a fitness expert this is just my personal opinion.
Your exercise routine appears very rigorous (and I admire you for being able to stick to it), but not altogether safe. You say you're only eating ONCE a day, and while salads are healthy, you NEED a balanced diet. Water helps you lose weight, but where are you going to get the carbs and protein and everything else for energy?
As for #1, you may or may not drop the weight. 40 pounds in 9 weeks is a stretch, to me.
As for #2, you've already admitted that your methods may not be so healthy, so I would suggest consulting someone (a nutrionist, a doctor) before going any further. And as for the weights, you're going to need more than a salad to lift those.
Good luck this summer. It's admirable to want to get into better shape, but please do it safely!

2007-06-20 13:21:13This will cause temporary weight loss. You need to still eat healthy. If your body is used to not eating and you start eating again, it will cause significant weight-gain rather quickly.
Your plan will make you lose weight... you need a plan to maintain that weight-loss!
As soon as you lose the weight, you need to start weight-training (or go ahead and incorporate it now) so that you will tone your muscles and such.
Just a salad is going to suck and you will be prone to binge-eating, which is worse.
Good luck! I hope this helps!

2007-06-20 13:15:08I think you should eat more than once a day. Your just starving yourself that way. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You can have like a bowl of cereal with fruit, eggs, bacon, as long as its in small portions.
Its better to loose the weight the healthy way and keep it off! Doing it the unhealthy way might send you to the hospital!
You can lift weights and stretch, but you also need cardio, which you are doing on the treadmill. If you get tired of that, go walk/jog around in your neighborhood for 45-60 minutes.
Don't take it too hard on yourself, or you will burnout.
And remember to take a day off, because your body will need it!

2007-06-20 13:12:11That diet is a bit extreme? Your devoting all your time to loosing weight. Um, well with this diet, I doubt you will have trouble loosing the weight. Either way, good luck and I hope for the best for you.

2007-06-20 13:17:49try the British Heart Foundation 3 day diet. You will lose 10 pounds in the 3 days and if you do it once a week you can lose the 40 pounds. Its easy to do and it works because of something to do with the foods you eat together (odd mixes). It really works, i promise, I did it recently and it changed the way I eat and the food I eat and I'm still losing weight, and I don't exercise. www.geocities.com/momandad.geo/diet.html

2007-06-20 13:22:25Make sure you eat a good breakfast in the morning. Then excercise. include protein and fruit to keep your strength up and endurandance. Avoid salt, but drink gatorade to replish the fluids and electrolights. Drink slimfast for lunch and snack if needed and eat a small dinner. Do not eat after 8:00pm..
Pay attention to how your body is feeling but be very careful about not falling into an eating disorder. I have been there and I still suffer the complications of my youth on how I mistreated my body. Ask for help from family and friends. So they will support you on this diet. Throw away all sweets. Put pictures of thinner women on the fridge. So when you get the urge to binge you remember your goal. I know you can do it just be careful. Good luck.

2007-06-20 13:17:321. you may but it would be better if you eat 3 small meals a day to boost your metabolism instead of the 1.
2. the reason they call it the unhealthy way is because it is unhealthy and you will probably gain it back if you dont change your habits that got you to that weight.
3. that would help yes but you need a little protein in your diet to feed the muscle, tofu isnt the best tasting but its ok in salads and has alot of protein.
just to add, the more you stress out about this the harder it will be, relax and have confidence you are doing the right thing and stick to it, change your eating habits for the better and it will all come together
