Ask:Nausea Stomach pain Weight loss. Could it be Crohne 39s disease or something else
2008-01-08 08:39:09I am 15 years old and have had severe nausea for about four months. I was diagnosed with Celiac disease about a month ago, but am still having terrible nausea and moderate to severe stomach pain, loss of appetite, shakes, cramps, blood in stools, occasional diherrea, fatigue and headaches. Also I lost 5 pounds without trying over just 2 weeks. I have been strictly following a gluten free diet and even went off lactose after the doctor suggested it to help with my symptoms. I know that Celiac disease can take a long time to repair the intestione after going gluten free. But I don't feel any better. In fact the nausea and stomach pain have worsened it seems. I was wondering if it could be Crohne's disease or some other sort of disease causing my symptoms.

2008-01-08 18:34:50A month is a very short time to get the gluten diet in control, and ask yourself are you truly following the diet! But most of all if you are still having these symptoms you should be telling your doctor. Both Celiac and Crohns are horrible diseases, but only your doctor can diagnose you. talk to your doctor!!! Weight loss can be a symptom of both disease. I was diagnosed with celiac and ended up having crohns, so it is possible. Hopefully you will not have to go thur what i have been thur. The key is to tell your doctors everything you are feeling. Keep a daily journal of what you eat, where your pain is, when you go to the bathroom, what its like. your moods. How you feel, you must let your doctors know EVERYTHING! An be patients cause this could take awhile! An allot of tests, drugs, and allot of run-a-round. Sometimes i wonder what the doctors really know! Best of luck to you. God Bless

2008-01-08 09:02:08Yes, talk to the doctor, soon, and ask him these questions. I had an uncle with the disease, and he could not eat anything aged, and no grains at all. so no wine, cheddar cheese, beer either for this adult.
Are you sure that you have got rid of all the gluten? Do you read boxes of process foods at the store, mind things at restaurants? There might be a source you have overlooked.
and yes, it can take awhile to heal. But 4 months seems a little long. Call the doctor, the weight loss is not excessive for a normal size person, but since I can't see you, and you are sick, Call the Doctor.

2008-01-08 09:16:22I don't know much about either disease, however, I have a lot of experience with doctors as a result of my own medical issues. It may just take some time for your treatment to work. Considering that you were experiencing symptoms for four months and you were only diagnosed a month ago, you may just be looking at a little more time with you treatment.
If you and/or your parents/guardians think the treatment isn't working, it never hurts to get a second opinion. If you were diagnosed by a General Practitioner or some other type of doctor with a broader practice, consider seeing a Gastroenterologist as they specialize in the digestive system. Of course, you may already be seeing a Gastroenterologist. In that case, it never hurts to check with another one. If you haven't done this already, you might check with the Celiac Disease Foundation and see if there is a doctor in your area that specializes in Celiac Disease. Their website is www.celiac.org. I don't know if they actually do doctor referrals, but they may be able to help you in some other way. A doctor who specializes in the disease may be better able to rule it in or rule it out as the cause of your discomfort. I hope you start feeling better soon!!!

2008-01-11 12:08:10The symptoms you describe are all common in celiacs who have been glutened, or before the problems in the intestine have had time to heal properly. A month is not long enough for the healing to take effect.
To doublecheck that you are not missing ingredients when you check stuff for gluten, see the article here, which may help:

2008-01-08 20:12:49You should see a doc.
If it is Celiac, you will need to resume eating gluten (thus why you should see a doc BEFORE starting the gf diet on your own) for testing to be accurate. However, do know that it can take months, sometimes YEARS for the damage done by Celiac to heal and the body will never be safe from gluten. In other words, u can be gluten free and your intestines will heal if u have Celiac, BUT you will need to be gluten free fo rlife.
It is also hard ont he body to adjust to the sudden change of diet. Some ppl feel worse before theyf eel better.
If u wish to avoid the doc or not resume eating gluten or dairy, try this site for at home genetic testing www.enterolab.com. It can tell u if u carry the genes for Celiac and if u do, go ahead and stay gluten free for life.
Hope this helps. U have all the signs of Celiac. But a good GI can help u better. Go to www.csaceliacs.org and click Local Support. There you should find a support group somewhat close to you and that local leader should be able to refer u to a good GI doc in your are who knows Celiac.
www.csaceliacs.org
www.celiac.com

But u should see a doc to rule out other more serious issues such as Crohn's.
Best of luck.

2008-01-09 06:57:46I'm sorry to hear that you're still so ill. When my husband was diagnosed, we were told that it might take between 6 months to several years for him to feel better. Luckily for him, he was diagnosed due to anemia and not the symptoms you're describing.
The first thing that popped into my head is that you are eating something that you THINK is gluten free but in fact contains some sneaky version of gluten. I ended up buying a pocket dictionary of ingredients in most foods so I can easily look up what something is. It tells me whether that ingredient is OK or not for a gluten free diet. It was published by the Celiac Association and was about $5. Well worth the money.
Since you already have the diagnosis, I would say that you should continue on the gluten free diet. However, I would suggest two things.
1. Try to get a referral to a dietitian who is familiar with and has experience with celiac disease. You might have to contact the Celiac Association in your area for an appropriate dietitian. They are usually covered under insurance.
2. Try to eat things that are naturally gluten free at first. Steak and baked potato with a side of broccoli. Roast beef, mashed potato (if using gravy then thicken with cornstarch rather than flour), and a side of English peas with carrots. Baked chicken, rice (again use cornstarch thickened gravy), green bean/wax bean/carrot medley.
**Remember, do not use a gravy mix because there is probably something in there that will cause problems for you.
When my husband was diagnosed, I went a whole month just making stuff that he had always had that just happened to already be gluten free. Then I slowly introduced the gluten free stuff in. That way he never felt that he had to "suffer" from his illness.
If you have done the above things, I would definitely go back to the doctor. I have read that people who have celiac disease have become so run down that they have developed peripheral allergies to not only gluten but to dairy, beef, chocolate, etc. It may be that you have developed some other allergy that needs to be addressed.
I do hope you feel better soon.
One of the websites that I found to be really helpful when my husband was first diagnosed was Silly Yaks, a Yahoo! group.
Here's a link to a really interesting lecture on Celiac Disease that was posted to YouTube by the University of California Television:
