Ask:I need soke help with hypothyroid issues and weight loss and some other issues Please
2008-05-25 17:48:12I have been on levothyroxine for 3 years now, I was diagnosed about 9 mnths after I had my twins. I have never been to and Endocrinologist. I am not able to lose weight, I have spoke with my doctor about this and she asks me what I am doing and says I need to excercise at least 6 days a week for 1 hour! I do weight watchers and I excercise 4-5 times a week for 35-40 minutes, I think I should see some sort of weight loss, and it has been 1 month and nothing. When I asked for a referrel to and endo, she just told me to exercise more and then we will see. Well, I have decided that Tuesday I will be going to a different doctor, and try and get the referrel, my question is what do I tell the endocrinologist, what questions to ask, and if anyone knows of a thyroid med that has worked better for them rather than the levothyroxine. I really appreciate the advice and help, I am just very frustrated with not being able to lose anything, need to lose about 25-30 lbs, thanks for the help=)

2008-05-26 05:36:49Levothyroxine is the treatment for hypothyroidism because it simply replaces what the thyroid would normally produce. Your thyroid is not making enough thyroxine (aka T4), so you take pills with T4 in - simple. It's true that the thyroid also normally secretes a tiny bit of a hormone called T3, but most of the T3 in a a person's body hasn't been secreted by the thyroid - the body makes it from the T4.
It's very simple to tell if your T4 dose is correct by looking at your blood test results for FT4 (basically a measure of T4) and TSH (a hormone produced by the pituitary gland to stimulate the thyroid). This is very straightforward and most people with hypothyroidism do not need to see an endocrinologist.
A lot of people with hypothyroidism get very frustrated because they expected to lose weight, feel full of energy etc when the got treated and it doesn't really happen. The thing is, lots of people without hypothyroidism feel tired and struggle to lose weight. There have been loads of studies done that show that increasing someone's dose above what is necessary doesn't make them feel any better.
I don't recommend Armour thyroid. This contains T4 and T3 but as I have already mentioned, you don't need to take extra T3 (I bet if I measured your T3 it would be normal). The proportion of T3 to T4 in armour thyroid is too high and many people get unpleasant side effects such as shaking and palpitations. Also the dose is much more variable - with levothyroxine you get exactly the same amount each day - armour thyroid is not so consistent.

2008-05-25 17:59:40Perhaps your thyroid dose is not high enough, this would depend on your TSH levels from your lab work. If you're in your 30s or 40s, your TSH should be in the 1.0-1.9 range. I had similar problems, with levothyroxine, and had conversations with my doctor. We decide to switch me to Armour Thyroid. Levothyroxine contains T4 (Thyroxine) which your body converts to active T3 (Tri-Iodothyronine). Armour thyroid contains active T3, and skips the conversion process. This worked better for me. I was able to have this dialogue about my treatment with my physician because I have a high level of understanding about this process. Remember, you can not rely on thyroid meds alone to correct weight loss. Calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate) using an online calculator and figure out your max caloric intake, continue the cardio, and drink plenty of water. Good Luck
