Ask:OK weight loss experts why am I not losing weight
2007-02-11 22:48:26I am a soldier overseas and have been working out on my time off. I go to the gym 5-6 nights/week. During these sessions I usually do an 1 hr + of cardio exercise: either running on the treadmill (1% incline @ 6.5-7.0) or eliptical machine (level 15 @ random/hills). I usually do not stop until I have burned at least 700 calories. After cardio I do an ab and pushup routine. I have been working out for 6 weeks. I have gained 10 lbs since I started. Now, I have noticed that my close are tight, specifically my thighs. I want to lose wieght and inches. Why am I gaining wieght and inches? As far as my diet. I don't eat a lot of meat (maybe one portion a day), therefore, I mainly eat fruit, vegetables and carbs. Please Help Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2007-02-11 23:09:35The main answer behind losing weight is you must burn more calories than you take in. I would advise you to add some weight training in between your cardio. More reps with less weight will keep you toned while less reps with more weights will make you bulky. Muscle mass keeps your metabolism up, which in turn will burn more calories. As far as your cardio goes, when I was working with a trainer, she always advised me to break it up. We would to 15-30 minutes on an eliptical or treadmill and then go to weights. Sometimes we would head back to cardio, other times we would do yoga or pilates work. Since you're already doing an hour on a treadmill, I would suggest adding incline and lowering your speed. You could also add handweights while walking on a high incline. With your diet, it sounds pretty well balanced but you need to add some more protein whether it's fish, chicken, or a handfull of nuts. Most people would say to have 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 regular sized meals. I found that if you take one day to prepare a couple of different meal options and portion them into ziplock baggies, you can just grab one when you're heading out the door. I don't know if you would have the time to do all this, but it might help you out and keep you from grabbing something that might not be the best choice. Remember whole grains are better than white bread and white flour, and you're much better off overdosing on the veggies than the fruit. It's still better for you than a candy bar, but it also has a natural sugar in it which can cause blood sugar levels to spike. Cutting out excess beverages like coffee, black tea, soda and fruit juice will also help if you can handle the extreme nature of drinking only water. It's a tough choice, but if you're serious, you'll be willing to make the sacrifice.

2007-02-11 22:55:03Unless you are fat you will not lose weight. If you are working out your legs a lot then you will build muscle on then and your thighs will get bigger not smaller from muscle.

2007-02-11 23:10:25muscle is heavier thn fat, so if you are gaining muscle, you prolly will gain weight. on the plus side, that means your burning more fat to run those big muscles. watch what you eat also, avoid soft drinks thats not diet, including snapple since they also contain high fructose corn syrup. get rid of trans fat, control your fat intake in a week. eating is very crucial to losing weight.

2007-02-11 22:58:02I'd say the problem is with yor diet.
The ONLY way to lose weight is to consume less calories than you burn.
Cut back on the foods you eat with high fat and high sugar content. Eat only single servings (read the label) with less than 3 grams trans fat and 3 grams sugars. Throw out all of your ice cream, chips, cookies, cheese, fried foods, bacon, and candy.
Eat breakfast, and eat five small meals per day instead of three big meals. Don???t starve yourself during the day, but if you don't wake up famished, then you ate too much the day before. Stop eating at least two hours before you go to bed.
Get 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Turn off the TV and the computer. Sleep is vitally important.
Don't consume alcohol??”alcohol is nothing more than empty calories with no nutritional value. Some people will argue that alcohol has some health benefits when consumed in moderation??”I???m not debating that??”but we???re talking about weight loss here. Lay off the booze if you want to lose the belly.
Drink lots of water, then drink more. Not tea, not Gatorade, not milk. Water.
Good luck.

2007-02-11 23:44:43your body needs three meals a day and eating meat is good for you. its a natural source of protien. the weight you are gaining isnt fat but muscle. carbs will make you gain weight. do not eat carbs. even though they are a good source of energy they will make you gain wieght if you want to loose it then dont eat alot of carbs. some carbs arnt bad though. keep your diet the same as possible. its only been 6 weeks so keep working out some more.
