Ask:running versus walking for weight loss
2008-05-10 11:30:24I want to lose some weight and tone my lower body. I use the treadmills at the gym. Is it better to run/jog or walk on the treadmill to achiee this? Or is it better to use an elliptical?

Also add some big incline for a challenge. If you go the same distance for running or walking you are burning the same amount of calories. Keep it interesting which will keep you from getting bored with your workout. Do the elliptical too. Use all the cardio machines for the best cross training. Just switch which days you do them. Good luck!

2008-05-10 11:33:58Running.. The reason is because it simply is not possible to burn enough calories when walking...
Also, for burning fat, the most effective procedure is to vary the intensity. Meaning, pick a profile on the treadmill the pushes you very hard for a couple minutes and then comes back down... The repeat this a couple of times with varying intensity...

2008-05-10 11:35:12I am not a fan of eliptacles.... Try this... go OUTSIDE... Yes, outside... and run for one minute... then walk for 2 - 3 minutes... then run for one minute... then walk for 2 - 3 minutes.... Do this interval for one hour a day.... Eventually increase the running time and decrease the walking times.... I am a runner and I still do this... although I Run HARD for 2 minutes and then jog for 2 minutes... run hard for 2, jog for two....
This is called interval running and will really help with weightlose, and be easy to start out with.... you won't burn yourself out and not want to do it anymore... It is a good combo!

2008-05-10 11:33:45the fastest and best way to lose weight is by running on the treadmill then go on a slow pace then go back running to a fast pace. Running burns a lot of calories and is the best way to lose and get flat abs . I used ti have no abs now from running and doing situp i have lost 40 pounds and got a 6 pack from the exercise.

2008-05-10 11:38:32Hmm. Both are just fine. I found that when I run an average of 9 miles a week, I lose weight, and if I walk, it will usually take 30 miles or so a week.
Personally, I think an elliptical would be better on your bones and joints, but hey, we all live once.

2008-05-10 11:34:15Running is much better. walking to me takes no effort and burn little caloires. i would do a mixture of the both though. walk for as much of the day you can, outdoors and run around 3 times a week/ as much as you can.

2008-05-10 11:34:33You will burn more fat by running. You will also gain cardiovascular health that won't happen from walking. The elliptical will do the same. Choose whichever you like best :)

2008-05-10 11:33:47I like the ellipticals better because they are not as hard on the knees. As far a running goes you need to run at least 30 miles a week to achieve weight loss. Good luck
