2008-02-01 10:38:22Hi
I bought the tablets in the USA when I was there. It's trade name is Alli. It has been approved by the FDA. It's main use is to stop the absorption of some of the fats that you consume but you have to eat less than 15g of fat at every meal. If you don't you have terrible diarrhoea and wind. I have taken it for about a month now and have lost about 11lbs. Apart from keeping to the fat intake limits I have eaten normally. Contrary to some of the answers it actually makes you eat healthier foods! There is nothing unhealthy about eating less fat. I have 3 normal meals a day plus a snack later on. The only thing I really miss is cheese.
But it is vital that your fat intake is low as I have heard that some people are actually not making the loo if you get my drift!

2008-02-01 09:31:56Alli, and other related weight loss products, work by causing foods to go through your gut (intestines) faster. It works a bit, but it is NOT a "miracle" by any stretch, and like everything else, works better if you "help it along" - and at that point, why pay more?
The usual problem with any of these is that the person taking them thinks that they can eat anything and still lose, which causes them to actually take in more calories than they did before - it's not a conscious thing, but does in fact still happen.
The down-side is that if you take it long enough for it to work by itself (i.e., no reduction of food intake, no exercise), your gut will get used to the "help" and when you get off it, your system then becomes sluggish and you end up with constipation.

2008-02-01 09:31:12It's called, don't buy it. Exercise and cut your caloric intake. Weight loss pills are the worst most cheating/lazy way to lose weight that you should otherwise seek a lifestyle change to achieve and keep off. Diet pills suppress appetite and speed up the heart rate but you can gain weight back and more when you stop taking them because of heart palpitations. This is usually b/c you resort back to your regular eating habits after your metabolism is off balance. Cardio baby! Weight training! Earn it. You'll feel great!

2008-02-01 09:30:15It's called Orlistat, the trade name is Xenical. It blocks fat absorption in the gut, but if you continue a high fat diet you will have some very nasty side effects such as faecal leakage, flatulence and stomach pains. You have to go on a low fat diet for it to work properly, but you would probably lose weight on a low fat diet anyway. You have to be over 18 years old and have a BMI of over 30 to be eligible to take it. Also your GP won't prescribe it unless you can show you can lose at least 4lb before taking it.

2008-02-01 10:36:00Please please please...learn something now - EVERY pill out there that is supposed to help you lose weight is an expensive SCAM. 'Fatblockers' come around every 10 years or so, the pill gurus make their billions, then they go away as women find out how lousy they work, and how awful the side effects, and just as we are forgetting (or a new young crop is coming up from the teens) they bring back fat blockers in a new form or new name.
Some pills (like Alli) work to block some fat from being absorbed. Big deal You could simply stop eating about 1/4 less fat every day and get the same results...except what you will avoid by not eating the fat in the first place is the big nasty side effects of these supposed fat blockers-
very VERY smelly explosive diarrhea with blobs of fat in it that ruin your underwear and can occur when you are asleep, riding in a car or bus....in church, whenever. It's almost impossible to control these outbursts.
Another bad side effect is that Fat blockers also block vital nutrients from getting into your system, so you need to take special supplements. (More money out of your pocket)
There is ONLY way to lose weight:
First, talk to your doctor about how many calories he/she thinks you should limit yourself to every day - it will depend on your body mass index and how much weight they want you to lose on a weekly basis (usually 1-2 lbs/week). You don't want to lose weight faster than this unless a doctor/nurse practitioner/dietician tells you because losing weight too fast risks shutting your metabolism down. This makes losing the rest of your weight harder. When you fall off those trick diets you end up gaining MORE weight because your body thought it was starving and turned your metabolism to low, and it's really really hard to get it turned back up again.
Generally you divide your calories into morning, noon and afternoon. 30% in the morning, 10% for mid morning snack. 30% for lunch, 10% for afternoon snack. then 15% for dinner and 5% for night snack. Each meal should be 30% protein (fish, meat, eggs, milk), 10% fat,. and 60% carbs- in the form of whole grains, vegetables & fruits.
Nothing 'white'. no sugar, white flour, white rice, or potatoes although filled potato skins are very healthy and can be prepared quickly as a filling and healthy food
( here's the recipe bake the potato in the microwave for 6 min. Cool enough to handle. Cut in 1/2, scoop out the center leaving 1/3 inch around. Fill the potato skin with broccoli floret, cauliflower, carrots, celery onions etc and sprinkle it with low fat cheddar and mozzarella cheeze. microwave 5 more minutes with a cover over it or broil it til golden brown.- a tasty high fiber, low fat and low cal supper! (the insides you scooped out you can give to someone skinny or use in making bread)
Avoid EVERYTHING with High fructose corn syrup - read the packages for this ingredient and then don't buy it. Don't eat it for sure. They use this stuff to fatten hogs - and it works on people the same way.
Meanwhile, you need an exercise program to get your system turned back to high. Walking is fine and you can meditate, listen to music, etc. Walking in water burns even more calories than on land because you are walking against water pressure. Jump rope. DANCE! yes, turn up the music and dance while you do chores...even when you dishes crank up the stereo and try to burn calories while you scrub. It makes the job go really fast, too. If you live within 3 miles of school why not walk to and from the school every day?? It not only helps you it helps the planet. Get some friends to join you on your walk every day and it can be great fun! I used to walk almost 4 miles anytime it wasn't raining or too cold and I never gained a pound no matter what I ate. When I stopped walking I gained 10 lbs in 2 mos
So skip the expensive scam pills - they are a quick short and unpleasant waste of money you will regret.

2008-02-01 09:28:33Yes i saw that on the news last night!
It doesnt work unless you have a healthy diet and do excersise so if you dont do either of these, try them first!
The diet pill also makes you put on weight as soon as you come off it!
