I think weight loss depends a lot on your body's metabolism... so you would need to be exercising more than usual and eating less "junk". There's no need to STARVE yourself to lose weight, it would only lower your immune system and then you'd be a lot less likely to be capable of exercising....

Even 1000 is a bit low. Go for around 1500 and do a bit more exercise. This way you are eating a sustainable amount of food, there's flexibility built in for special occasions or lapses and you can keep it up for along period of time - meaning the weight comes off and stays off.

1000 to 1200 calories is about right. DO NOT starve yourself on 500 calories.......you will never lose weight effectively for long.

Yes, the body reacts badly to starvation diets and some of the damage is permanent. A case in point is my anorexic daughter's mitral valve prolapse that resulted from her condition. This is something that does NOT get better when and if a proper diet is resumed.
Crash diets also crash your body.

I've been managing a weight loss group (basically a private 'Biggest Loser') I can say not only from personal experience but add the other members experiences....
Our current leader eats right around 1800 calories and exercises every day. The top 5 all have diets in the 1500 range and are consistently loosing 3-5 lbs a week... doing nothing more than eating healthy and exercising at least 4 times a week.
We all dropped 5-8 pounds in the first 10 days or so but all hit a plateau on a the more restricted (800-1000 calorie diet) and only began to loose again when we increased our caloric intake to at least 1500.
Don't underestimate your body's ability to adjust to a drastically lower diet- you can loose 5-7 lbs initially on a very low calorie diet, but most of that is water weight (normally a result of lower carbs and sodium, inherent with a healthier diet). Your body depletes its glycogen reserves first (your muscle's primary energy source) At that point you'll brain will have adjusted what it thinks your body can "function on" and as a result you'll find yourself with little energy (remember- those muscle reserves aren't at 100% now), feeling deprived and worst of all- barely loosing a pound a week. Your metabolism can drop in half (function on 750 calories vs 1500 without burning fat) if it thinks it is starving.
I'm finally moving up in the ranks after a few weeks of resistance training. You can to aerobics until your heart explodes but only until you build a little muscle will you really start to see the pounds drop off and stay off.
    Good luck!

    Hi,
Basically don't worry so much about counting calories or dieting. You need to worry about your body fat percentage, and not your weight. If your Body Fat is at a healthy level, it doesn't matter what you weigh. For example I am tall and pretty muscular and athletic, with a healthy level of body fat. Yet because of my muscle mass and height, I am 'obese' according to the BMI (body mass index).
Just eat good healthy meals, at least 3 or 4 a day including breakfast. Apart from breakfast (a good meal of fruit/cereal/fibre) each meal should contain a good ammount of protien (chicken/fish, etc) a few carbohydrates (rice/pasta/potatoes) and lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants (fresh fruit and veg).
There is nothing wrong with having the occassional takeaway/pizza/choccy bar, etc, as long as you limit this to occassional treats.
If you do this, you will be eating a good healthy diet which will give you a good metabolism and will help you maintain or lose a little of your body fat over a good period of time.
    Secondly you NEED to excercise.
A lot of Cardio excercise (running/swimming/cycling etc) will improve your heart rate and your fitness levels, improve your metabolism and burn a lot of body fat.
Weight and strength training (this doesn't neccessarilly mean body building! sit ups, torso work, light weights still count) will improve your body tone, strengthen your muscles and give you a good toned physique for when you do burn off that body fat.
It is much more about living a healthy lifestyle, excercising, keeping your body fit and strong, and filling it with the right nutritional fuels than just limiting your food intake to lose a bit of weight.
Good luck and hope this helps.

The lower the calorie intake the quicker your body will need to burn reserves. So if you took in no calories your body would burn reserve to allow you to function.
However this is not healthy - You will experience all the same side effects of starvation - do a google for starvation.
And when you do take food your body will convert it as quickly as possible and store it in fear that there is a famon.
It is crazy and reckless to mess about with your body in this way and the long term effects can be devastating but it is your body.
