    I am a heavy cyclist using cycling as means to lose weight and I need to get an idea of good foods to eat. I cycle about 5 days a week and I am working on longer rides tp help with the weight loss...

    If you are capable of cycling five days a week I can't see you having a weight loss issue. The cycling itself should offer a very high caloric burn. But in the event that you are over-weight and need additional help beyond the cycling and want to use nutrition as an aid to weigt loss, then there is so much you can do.
    Mainly stay hydrated first thing due to the amount of cycling you are doing. You will sweat out the salts and excess water are the first things to go. Which does reduce your over-all weight.
    It's all about replenishing fluids, cleasing the body quickly.
    Foods to assist in weight loss are all fruits and veggies. Go vegan for a short period, ( a month should show a healthy loss)but keep eggs and tuna in your diet for the sake of proteins. They are low in calories but still offer the estential proteins for health and muscle tissue that may be lost by improper diets.
    One month should tell you if this is working for you. If you see a weight loss then continue the program..............
    Some say water is your best friend and to a point I will agree. All drinks/fluids are basically water with flavorings, just avoid the sugary ones. Diet coke is not your friend!
    Black coffee, un-sweetened tea, No carbonated drinks.
    Un-sweetened fruit juice ( apple juice has a laxative effect) cranberry juice is a wonderful duretic and very healthy for the kidneys.
    The optimum burn time is twenty minutes after a meal. So have a healthy dinner of say:
    1 cup steamed/boiled squash with oinions(pepper/garlic..)
    1 cup brown rice w/real butter and basil (fake butter is a no-no)
    1 cup tuna salad (tuna/onions/pepper/tomato/light mayo)
    8 un-salted soda crakers
    1 fruit item, watermelon is best for its durectic properties.
    then go for your regular ride.
    It is beter to eat 6 small meals/snacks than it is to go without a couple of meals and eat 1 big meal. Therefore keeping your metabolism in check. Starvation does nothing for weight loss. It is a very temporary solution.
    My Mother, Sister and I used this method, except "walking" was our source of exercise. After 3 months here are our results:
    Mom lost: 32 lbs ( beginning weight 178)
    Sis lost: 38 lbs ( beginning weight 212)
    I lost 27 lbs ( beginning weight 165)

    Eat balanced meals. Try to stay away from sugars and starches. Celery is a good snack food.

    With that amount of excercise, any sensible diet will allow a great deal of fat loss. The key to dieting is moderation. Do not eat too much sweets, drink too much soda, take in too much fat or sugar, too much of anything. In fact, cut out sodas completely, no candy bars, no chips.
    Eat plenty of protein and fiber, and for that amount of excercise take in plenty of complex carbohydrates (that would be potatoes or pasta, not sodas) so you can maintain your energy. Fruits and vegetables are choice as well. Do not try to cut out fat or sugar completely, as your body needs low amounts of this in order to function. Take in too little fat in your diet, and your body will start to "hoard" the little fat that you do eat.
    Be warned though, if you are starting cycling after a sedentary lifestyle you will very likely begin to put on muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat, so while it may appear that you aren't losing as much weight as you'd like to, you will certainly be losing fat.
    One last point, drink as much water as you can hold in your system. Not before you cycle, but after you finish and throughout the day constantly replenish fluids. I promise, a few weeks like this and you'll look and feel great.

    Grapefruit boosts the rate of metabolism which helps in weight loss. Watch the carbs. Check food labels carefully, looking for hidden fats. Skip the dressings, mayo and other condiments.Eat lean meats, like chicken, or les fatty beef. Eat less starchy foods like rice, pasta etc. Good Luck!!

    I use the gas rule. If it gives you gas, it's usually good. Beans, broccoli, snow peas, all that high fiber stuff.

    Really good deli meat like turkey or chicken. Protein really helps you boost your energy and build muscle. Only select carbs though if any. But always remember to take your fiber! You can have serious health problems in the future if you don't take your fiber!

    I'm not a rep for this publisher, but I found that "theAbsDiet" book has very easy to understand list of foods that you can incorporate in your daily routine. I say this because you're not trying become a competitive cyclist at the moment, but trying to just manage your weight better. As you will see, the book is not for cyclists per se, but it will help you get an idea of your food parameters when you go shopping for food the next time, or making dinner for yourself.
