Ask:Sorbitol the great weight loss food
2008-01-11 02:45:11I've been reading that around 20 sticks of Sorbitol sweetened chewing gum can give you diorrhaea and cause you to lose a lot of weight. Assuming that people could put up with having tummy problems, could this be the dietary dream that people have been looking for?

2008-01-11 13:30:32one stick of gum has about 1.25 grams of sorbitol so you would have to chew more than 25 sticks of gum to get the effect. I'm sure its also very uncomfortable, is gas/bloating/diarrhea worth all that? i once ate some ice cream with that stuff in it and boy did i pay for it! i could not go anywhere and had to stay near my bathroom for the next 48 hours. there was even a warning on the label that if you eat more than 1 serving that it could happen and it sure did!
in the reading that i did, the people that lost weight with sorbitol did so unknowingly and were actually misdiagnosed with crohn's disease or some other condition.

2008-01-11 02:48:02Any laxative would have the same effect. You can purge yourself thin, but you can also purge yourself dead.

2008-01-11 20:21:22Well this is the first time that I have heard anything about this, I have read and saw that it was FDA approved and it seems like the only problem that it seems to cause is diarrhoea, well I have also read a while ago that alot of models have taken laxatives to loose weight but you have to be able to wean yourself off of them as with any drugs. So I am one to say that I am going to try it and see what happens. I have about 30lbs I have to loose and if a piece a gum is going to do the job then why not.

2008-01-11 02:57:37No, it is not a dietary dream! Any laxative is not the right way to go about losing weight, the only sensible way to lose weight is a proper, balanced diet plan. Taking laxatives for this is the worst thing - they will just cause problems in the long-term.
