Ask:Starting weight loss plan Any tips

    2007-10-17 14:35:19

    You read the question=
I'm starting a weight loss plan. I DO NOT want to call it a diet just because a diet seems so stressful. But I'm trying to look at the positive side and just look at it as "getting healthy"
I'm in high-school, and over-weight. (Please no comments)
So I'll need some tips on what to pack for lunch etc.
    Anything will help.
    Thanks!
Ps. What kind of exercise routines do you guys do?

    Lisa

I like to call it a 'lifestyle change.' I'm not dieting, and I'm not trying to lose weight rapidly. I'm trying to change the way I live by how I eat.
I like to eat foods that will be filling, and I insist on eating what I want by making compromises with myself. For example, this is my meal plan from Monday:
    Breakfast
Thomas Plain Bagel - 1 Bagel per Serv
Reduced Fat Jif - Crunchy Peanut Butter - 2 tbls
    Calories 480
    Total Fat 14g
    Lunch
Smart Ones Mint Chocolate Chip Sundae
    Michelina Stuffed Cheese Rigatoni
    Calories 450
    Total Fat 11g
    Dinner
Fazoli's Original Lemon Ice - Regular
Fazoli's 1 Fat Free Italian Dressing
    Fazoli's 1 Garlic Breadstick
Fazoli's 1 Slice of Cheese Pizza
    Fazoli's 1 Garden Side Salad
    Calories 650
    Total Fat 18g
    Snacks
    94% FF Popcorn
Edy's Slow Churned No Sugar Added Vanilla 1/2 Cup
    Calories 210
    Total Fat 6g
    Total Day
    Calories 1,790
    Total Fat 49g
I've been eating similar foods, not exceeding 1800 calories or 60 grams of fat a day, and have lost 9 lbs. in the last 2 months.
Make simple changes to your caloric intake first. No more drinks with calories, stick to diet drinks or water. (Caffeine & carbonation aren't good for you either, but if you can't quit everything cold turkey!)
Look for fat-free versions of milk, salad dressings, mayonnaise, honey mustard, etc.
Snack on 94% fat free popcorn, instead of movie butter popcorn.
Have peanut butter because its filling, but no more than 2 tbls. because its so fattening!
Eat lean meats like turkey & chicken instead of beef or pork.
Avoid the word sauteed or fried, and look for broiled, baked, or grilled.
    Don't eat creamy or oil-based soups/sauces & have red based soups/sauces instead.
Eat slowly, so that you can more easily identify when you are full.
And drink water like there is no tomorrow, most people mistake hunger for dehydration!
As for exercise, I take my dogs on a 2 mile walk every day. I used to take pilates classes, but now that I have the basics down I use a pilates DVD on rainy days. Anything that gets you moving at first is a good thing.

be sure to add plenty of plain old "WATER" to your diet. You also need plenty of fiber... 35 grams a day, I think....
Water will help your skin, help feed your brain, make you feel fuller... and is just darned healthy for you.... bottled or purified water ... tap water has too many unknowns in it...

yeah - DO NOT starve yourself and do not take regular BMI calculations too seriously!
you really shouldn't reduce your caloric intake to below 1200 if you are trying to lose weight in healthy way
consider what type of meal plans would work well for you and don't fall prey to fake fad diets (grapefruit, chocolate, onion soup... diet) because if its not a meal plan that you think you could consider following after you lose weight and keep it off then it probably isn't for you.
here is a link that could provide more answers and advice than I ever could http://women.webmd.com/features/7-diet-m... or http://www.webmd.com/diet/default.htm,
http://www.webmd.com/diet/guide/health-a... you can pretty much search WebMd for nutrition and health questions.
idk what you like for lunch but wraps are pretty good. fruits are always good water is recommended over diet soda for most people. dairy and protein can help curb some people's hunger.
in terms of exercise i hear that circuit training works well especially to help prevent weight plateaus. I myself prefer to mix up cardio workouts (jogging, elliptical, jump roping) with calisthenics, strength training, and toning.
i hope some of this helped :?

You're right don't call it a diet as it is more about a lifestyle choice that is permanent. Some simple tips: switch from white bread to whole grain, dairy that's reduced fat or fat free (there are lots of yummy fat free yogurts that can go into your lunchbox), drink water rather than soda, snack on fruits and veggies rather than chips. Also: take little steps. Don't try to change everything in one day as it will become too overwhelming and stressful. Make one change at a time, stick to it, and then move onto the next one. As far as exercise goes, I do stationary bike for 30 min. everyday.
Wish you luck and great results!

It won't make you fat if you eat anything in moderation. Eating leaner meat, cutting down carbo intake, and having more vegetables is a healthy diet . But be sure to do some work out because dieting alone is not sufficient in losing weight. Plus you must have self-discipline in order to help you gain the lean and slimmer you in no time.

there is no "quick fix" the only way to loose weight is to burn more calories then you take in. to do this safely try these things...
Most people KNOW what foods not to eat... but if you've been eating them your whole life, it's hard to make the switch... so do it gradually.
Processed sugars (cookies, candy, soda, ice cream),
    White breads
    Soda
    Fast Food
anything that makes you feel bad (see journal)
Keep a journal, write down everything that you put in your mouth, food, water, juice, everything. Also (something that helped me) write down how you feel in the following hours after you eat the food, this is how i learned that certain foods that i loved actually gave me headaches, gassy, sleepy, achie. This way you can see EXACTLY what you are eating and the effect it has on your body.
Find alternatives. Most people can't quit cold turkey, so find healthier things that you can eat that will satisfy. instead of cold stone, try frozen yogurt.
Eat more :) - Usually we tend to go for the sweet stuff because our blood sugar is low... we grab the sugar, our blood sugar spikes, and then crashes lower than where we started. the problem is this is a revolving door. so try to eat smaller portions with more frequency. i.e. every 2-3 hours.
MODERATION, it's ok to cheat every once in a while, just dont go overboard, have in your mind a limit before you start. i.e. instead of getting the super large size, get the small size.
As far as working out you want to start light as not to burn yourself out. start with just walking around the block the same time everyday, when you get comfy with that then try jogging. it's important that you do it the same time everyday, this will make it a habit and you will be less likely to quit. (you might want to start with 30 min everyday, and then bump it up to an hour everyday). MIght want to look into a gym membership if you dont already have one. Read, experiment, ask around and find out what works for you, everyone is different.
Turn off the TV. those who watch tv and eat dinner eat 20% more! also instead of watching tv for a few hours... get up and get active
Dont beat yourself up over it, it's an up hill battle and as long as you are going in the right direction, you'll get where you want to be.
