Ask:Symptoms loss of appetite and significant weight loss
2008-05-06 12:34:59I am a sixteen year old female experiencing loss of appetite and significant weight loss over a period of 3/4 months. Four months ago I weighed approximately 7 stone and I now weigh approximately 6 stone. In terms of medical background, I am suffering from haemoptysis as a symptom of a respiratory illness that is yet to be diagnosed and I am severely anaemic. I would like to know if anybody could relate these symptoms to an illness/condition or ideally, nothing serious at all. I have indeed consulted my local GP however, there is an extremely long waiting list at the moment and I am sure my question can be answered fairly quicker. Thank you for your time.

2008-05-06 12:49:24It seems to me that you would naturally be experiencing anemia due to the blood loss each time you cough up blood. The loss of appetite and coughing up blood are most likely caused by an infection and you probably have pneumonia. Have you had a chest x-ray? Has your doctor told you that your lungs sound clear or congested when he or she listens to your lungs? have you been placed on an antibiotic? If there is a long waiting list, contact your general practitioner and ask these questions. If you have pneumonia, this needs to treated right away!

2008-05-06 12:50:04Although I am a much older female, I had very similar symptoms unexplained weight loss, and loss of appetite. In my case, it was due to vitamin B12 deficiency.
I take B12 shots every 10 days or so, and my appetite returned, along with those phantom 10 pounds I lost.
I hope this helps you!
