Ask:Very fast weight loss for morbidly obese woman

    2007-06-06 13:08:55

I need to lose a massive amount of weight very quickly, at least 30kg for medical reasons, I'm morbidly obese, and am finding it really hard to lose "any" weight, I'm type 2 diabetic and have chronic pain that restricts many forms of excersise, I'm truly not making excuses, I want to do whatever it takes as my Dr told me yesterday that if I keep going this way I'll be dead in 5 years, and that I have a 1 in 4 chance of havig a stroke.....I'm only 35....MOST IMPORTANTLY I don't want to leave my family, I don't over eat, I have about 3 full meals during a 7 day week, and yes I know I have to eat small meals often being diabetic, I just have no appertite, I'm having xrays and ultra sounds of my abdominal and pelvic areas to see if I have an obstruction.......PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN, no need for nasty comments, I hate myself enough as it is.

It sounds like you are on course in many ways: your diet is okay, and you are getting checked out to see if there is a medical issue. There's one big thing that you're avoiding, that you just need to bite the bullet on: exercise.
Now, many people will tell you that cardio-vascular exercise (like walking, swimming, running) is best, the most healthy etc, and that is true. If you can, you need to get walking half an hour a day, every day. If that means using a walking frame, get a frame. If it means doing it on a treadmill to hold yourself up, do that.
I know that some people with lots of weight and/or pain are told to do wading. go to a swimming pool and walk back and forth. The water will support your body while you start building muscle strength back up.
Probably you'll be embarrassed at doing this, but I hope you can have the (emotional) strength to get beyond that, because it is very important.
This brings me to the other thing you need to do, that is very important, is build strength. My guess is that most of your muscles are weak and tiny right now. Well, here's an interesting fact about muscles: they burn energy (ie calories) even when you aren't using them. A bodybuilder is burning carbs from sitting and watching TV! Increased muscle strength will increase your metabolism. The problem is, that strength exercises aren't fun, especially at first.
I noticed that you brushed over this issue with "chronic pain that restricts many forms of exercise." Sorry, but that won't do.
Lack of exercise increases chronic pain. Stronger muscles and improved circulation (from exercise) will reduce chronic pain. You'll hurt a lot when you first start, but you'll hurt less in general as you continue.
update: I agree with another person answering here, that you might be better setting a more realistic goal, of losing the weight over, say, twelve months. One other thing, I talked a lot about exercise. But, you might be better getting professional advice on this- namely a physiotherapist. They will be sympathetic (they're professionals after all) and will know lots of safe, effective ways for you to rebuild strength.

I'm sorry to say this but you have a very unrealistic goal.
You say you are morbidly obese but you don't say how much you weigh.
There is no fast, safe way to lose a large amount of weight. It will be a gradual process and it will take a long time. With proper diet and exercise, you could safely lose 3-10 pounds a month. In other words, it could take you a year or more to reach your weight goal.
An option you may want to consider is either lap band or gastric bypass. A lap band is reversible. Gastris bypass is not. Lap band is not major surgery whereas gastric bypass is. You will need to speak with your doctor to see if this is an option for you.
Regardless of what you decide to do, meet with a nutritionist as soon as possible to discuss your nutritional needs and help you develop a diet plan. That's the easy part. Sticking to it is harder. I strongly suggest that you find a support group to help you through what are going to be some rough times.
Good luck to you. I wish you the best.

Here is a great site for info: www.cushings-help.com
    What about PCOS ?
People with diabetes can have gastric bypass surgery and it sounds like you might be a good candidate for that ?

Because you are diabetic, that makes it really tricky. My grandma is diabetic and very overweight, and she is currently on weightwatchers. Try www.weightwatchers.com and see if it would work with your diabetes.

Have you tested for Hypothyroid (a condition which slows down the thyroid activity)? A friend of mine practically eats nothing and is constantly putting on weight. She was tested positive for Hypothyroidism. It mostly affects women. If that is so then there are medicines available to cure it.
