Ask:are weight loss drugs like Phentermine safe for teenagers
2008-07-02 00:49:03I gained a ton of weight this year after my parents got divorced and nothing is making me lose it. I'm 5Ǝ and 145 pounds!!! I've never been this fat in my entire life!
My friends mom goes to this doctor who is a weight loss specialist and has lost SO much weight. I want to go to him. I know her mom's been taking phentermine (think that's the right spelling). She said that and some other drugs are the only things she's done.
What's the deal about it? How does it work? Is it safe? What about other weight loss drugs? I got the name of the doctor and posted the link below. Will you tell me if any of the drugs are okay?
I'm almost 17 and am done growing so that's not an issue. I'm going to do this on my own (I can afford it) and I just want to make sure the drugs aren't going to make me crazy or anything that will make my parents stress.

2008-07-02 00:53:30no its bad.
as a teenager your body is alot easier to work with. you can easily work off fat by exercising and eating healthy. diet pills are made for people a little older with bad metabolism. teenagers have quite good metabolism. and being 5Ǝ and 145 isnt bad.. trust me. just work it off.

2008-07-02 00:58:26Phentermine is NOT safe for you! Stop taking it and start a regular exercise program. Drugs do nothing but hurt you and make the Doctor rich.

2008-07-02 00:59:42I'm about to be seventeen myself but honestly i think you should stay away from things like diet pills no matter how natural or powerful they may be. They don't always give amazing lasting results and they aren't good for your body. Especially for people our age. I work out four times a week and i dance and eat healthy. Its simple as that doing it the natural way. Sure it takes work but trust me it is so worth it once you start seeing results that you actually worked hard for! Check into a local rec center or gym you can join and use frequently. Keep working out to keep results and eat healthy. Not sure what to eat? Ask your regular doctor or even someone who works at a gym and knows their stuff.

2008-07-02 01:05:34It's not safe for adults! So it's worse for teenagers. Google that word and look up side effects on that companies web site. Ask your parents and doctor if you can take l-carnitine with acetyl-l-carnitine. It is derives form food and it is an amino acid{part of a protein} that transports long chain fatty acids into your mitochondria. This means that it turns stored body fat into energy. It is not a drug, but it can raise blood pressure and heart rate as you burn fat. Start slow and check with doctor first.

Phentermine is a stimulant that is similar to an amphetamine. Taking phentermine together with other diet medications such as fenfluramine (Phen-Fen) or dexfenfluramine (Redux) can cause a rare fatal lung disorder called pulmonary hypertension.
Phentermine may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Stop using phentermine and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion
swelling, rapid weight gain
chest pain, fast or uneven heartbeat, feeling like you might pass out
unusual thoughts or behavior, feeling restless or confused or
dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).
Phentermine is a drug that suppresses appetite. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown. Phentermine is similar to amphetamine. It stimulates the nervous system, elevates blood pressure, and increases heart rate
SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects of phentermine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, constipation, an unpleasant taste, hives, impotence, palpitations, high blood pressure, and fast heart rates (palpitations). Central nervous system side effects include hyperactivity, insomnia, restlessness, tremor, and dizziness. Phentermine, especially when combined with fenfluramine, has been associated with high pressures in the pulmonary arteries (pulmonary hypertension) and defects in heart valves, both serious complications. Physical and psychological dependence may occur with the long-term use of phentermine. A withdrawal reaction, which includes excessive drowsiness, fatigue, tremors and depression may occur after prolonged use.
