Just lead an healthy life, it is surprisingly easy, it's just a matter of adjusting your routines and eating healthy food.
Excess weight comes from getting more calories into your body than you are burning, my suggestion would be to read up a little bit on it, then take action in the form of eating proper food and burning some calories.
You can start by reading all the articles here:

My father and step mother are life time members of weight watchers, they both have maintained their goal weight for almost 25 years now.
I myself am a little overweight but not too worried about it. My father says the secret is to get into a daily routine of exercise you like, and find healthy ways to prepare your meals, with modest portions.

I have many friends who have done them, and the only one that seems to yield long term results is Weight Watchers, and that's only if you do the correct program.
The other two programs talk about teaching you better eating skills, but they also supply the foods for you. The problem is that if you eat a Jenny Craig lasagne, you are still used to eating lasagne. You may lose weight, because the food is designed to help you do that, but you aren't really changing your eating habits you are simply eating special foods. I have one friend that swung like a pendulum for years between 180 and 300 lbs. She did Jenny Craig, and got down to 180 eating their food, and then stopped, and gained it back. When she hit 300, which was 10 more pounds than she had originally weighed when she started Jenny Craig, she turned around and did it again. She just swung back and forth for years. The last time I saw her, I didn't ask about her dieting, as I could see she is at a heavy point again. The real tragedy is that the food costs more than regular groceries, so it's been very hard on her pocketbook. Yes, it's great that she can eat brownies when she wants to, but the fact is that you cannot make regular brownies part of your every day diet and keep off lost weight. You need to learn to eat sensibly, rather than relying on special foods.
I also have friends who have gone up and down on Weight Watchers, but they mostly seem to be the ones who have done it without the support of the weekly meetings. Most of them have been very good about learning the points or exchanges system, and following it, but they eventually lose interest, and stop monitoring their intake so closely, and the weight creeps back on. I do know people who have managed to maintain weight loss, but they haven't been able to stay at their goal weight they have gained part of the weight back, and then been able to stay there. The ones who have had success have looked at the program as an educational tool, and a place to learn about proper nutrition, rather than as a weight loss system. And the ones who have succeeded have done the program where you go to weekly meetings and talk with other people. The support group aspect seems to be one of the keys to their success.
I have a friend who is a doctor (surgeon), and he was telling me that his uncle is a doctor as well, and that he (uncle) specialized in overweight patients. For many years he did the bariatric surgeries that make a person's stomach smaller, but last year he stopped because he doesn't believe even that really works. Apparently, he was seeing huge relapse numbers, and an awful lot of people gaining back all or even more weight a few years after the surgery. He has gone back to practicing gastroenterology and he is convinced that the only way for anyone to lose weight and keep it off is to become educated about food, and to exercise. He advocates people eating whatever they want, but eating in sensible portions, and making sure they have a balanced diet, and then making sure they get plenty of exercise. He also believes that not every person is supposed to wear a size medium: some people are supposed to wear larger sizes, and they can still be very healthy while doing that.
I wish I had a great success story for you. Actually, as I think about it, I do--I know people who have lost loads of weight. But if you are wanting to lose it and keep it off permanently, I am afraid my stories don't have happy endings. Everyone seems to pretty much have gained it back eventually.
My suggestion to you is to get in touch with a registered dietician, or to take nutrition courses at a local college. You can learn how best to build a healthy, nutritious diet that will help you stay at a healthy weight. And then find exercise that you like, and incorporate it into your regular routine. I think that's really the only way to permanently keep off the pounds.
    Good luck :)

I'm on Weight Watchers and it is by far one of the best weight loss programs out there. I have lost 11 pounds so far. Weight Watchers has you use everyday foods that you either buy or prepare yourself. The problem with Jenny Craig and similar programs is that they have you buy their food, so you never really learn how to change your food choices in order to keep the weight off. On Weight Watchers, what you do is keep track of points, not calories, and they give you the tools to do this. Points are much easier to deal with than hundreds of calories. The points are tailored to the amount you weigh so that you are not losing too fast and you remain healthy throughout your weight loss journey. For example, my daily points right now are 31, which amounts to about 1800 calories a day. Someone else's points might be 29, another's could be 27. In addition, at the meetings and online there are many success stories because WW also teaches maintence. Their credo is basically that it's a lifestyle change, not a diet. It's not something you do temporarily, like some diet plans. They also state that if you go hungry on WW, you're not doing it right. This is true, because if I choose the healthier foods instead of the bad ones, I sometimes have trouble eating enough foods in order to get in the points I need to remain healthy! Weight Watchers has a proven track record for the long term and is recommended by my doctor. It's worth the money, and is a lot cheaper than Jenny Craig, believe me. In my area, it's 28.00 dollars to join and 9.00 dollars a week thereafter.
